By: Sam Yund, Hunter Hatcher, Matt Boler TRUMAN DOCTRINE & DESEGREGATION OF THE MILITARY

TRUMAN DOCTRINE Truman announced this doctrine during a speech on March 12, 1947 Stated that the united states will help all free peoples who were threatened by outside forces or armed minorities Primarily targeted at keeping the USSR out of Turkey and Greece US gave Greece 400$ million to stop KKE (communist party) US gave Turkey 100$ million to stop USSR from taking control of the Dardanelles Precursor to the domino theory/containment policy Often seen as the start of the Cold War Drastic change from isolationism to interventionism Solidified US as world power

INTEGRATION OF ARMED FORCES By the end of WWII the Army is the largest employer of minorities Issued as executive order 9981 on July 26, 1948 Originally Truman tried to pass several racial reform acts through congress, but southern senators threatened to filibuster Conformative in nature Lots of resistance to desegregation, often times in a violent manner Took a significant time to accomplish February 2, 1948 Truman tells armed forces to begin making plans to desegregate armed forces. July 26, 1948 Truman issues executive order Army announces that it is 95% integrated
