Post WWII Map

Satellite Nations  After the war, Stalin he declared the need for a “buffer zone” on the Soviet Union’s western border.  He established communist rule throughout Eastern Europe.  The countries which remained under the Soviet control after WWII became known as satellite nations.

Containment The policy of containment was applied in Asia as well as in Europe. Containment in Europe 1.Marshall Plan 2.Truman Doctrine 3.Aid to Greece and Turkey 4.Berlin Airlift

USSR Gets the Atomic Bomb  Soviet Union tested their first atomic weapon in  This marked the beginning of an arms race between the two countries.

Truman Doctrine  The Truman Doctrine stated that the U.S. would help people who were resisting communism.

Marshall Plan  The Marshall Plan offered huge sums to enable the war shattered economies of Europe to rebuild and, by generating prosperity, to reject the appeal of Communism.

Berlin Airlift

Berlin Blockade  Attempt to starve city of Berlin into submission by the Soviets.  US and Britain organized airlift to help the city of Berlin resist the communist threat.  Lasted 10 months, and during this time US and British planes dropped over 2 million tons of food and supplies.  May 1949, Soviets lifted the blockade.

Creation of NATO & Warsaw Pact  The United States, Canada, Iceland and the non-communist European nations formed a military alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).  Warsaw Pact was the Eastern Europe’s response to NATO. It created a military alliance among those eastern European Communist countries.

NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION (NATO) NATO An attack on one = an attack on all.

China- Failure of Containment?  Civil War resumed after WWII between communists and nationalists  China falls to communism in  U.S. did not interfere in China  In the future, containment will extend to include Asia as well.

Korean War  “Temporary” division of Korea into 2 zones  Communist North Korea invades South Korea (June, 1950)  United Nations’ forces defend South Korea.

Korean War Cont…  Threat of the introduction of Chinese forces on behalf of North Korea  MacArthur calls for a “new war” against the Chinese and North Korea. Fear that the invasion of China might bring the Soviets into the war  Rift develops between MacArthur and Truman

Korean War Cont…  Truman fires MacArthur.  The war settles into a stalemate.  Dwight D. Eisenhower becomes president in He steps up the bombing of North Korea.  In 1953 he hints that he might use nuclear weapons.  1953 – armistice is signed. ( 38 th parallel )
