THE COLD WAR AND DECOLONIZATION What were the consequences of Decolonization?

Compare the economic and military power shifts caused by the war, including the Yalta Pact, the development of nuclear weapons, Soviet control over Eastern European nations, and the economic recoveries of Germany and Japan. Analyze the causes of the Cold War, with the free world on one side and Soviet client states on the other, including competition for influence in such places as Egypt, the Congo, Vietnam, and Chile. Understand the importance of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan, which established the pattern for America's postwar policy of supplying economic and military aid to prevent the spread of Communism and the resulting economic and political competition in arenas such as Southeast Asia (i.e., the Korean War, Vietnam War), Cuba, and Africa.

DECOLONIZATION: CAUSE AND CONSEQUENCE After World War II the colonial powers struggled to hold onto their oversees territories. African colonies assert their independence and form into nation-states. Ethnic and tribal rivalries are unleashed within the new nation- states, leading to political rivalries and warfare. In African nations such as Rwanda and the Sudan, ethnic and tribal rivalries escalate into genocide.

It is estimated to have killed 25 million Europeans, about one third of the entire population of Europe The Black Death arrived in Europe along Asian trade routes. It was transmitted to humans by fleas that lived on infected rats. The Black Death shrunk the peasant population. This made peasant labor more valuable. Feudalism came to an end in many European kingdoms. Jewish communities were blamed for the plague. They became victims of violence and persecution. Anti-Semitism became widely accepted in Western Europe. Many German Jews fled to Poland, where they were welcomed by the Polish nobles. A large and thriving Jewish community developed in Eastern Europe. The plague killed victims of every social class. Nobles increasingly relied upon the monarchs for wealth, influence, and power. European monarchs began to develop greater economic, and political power over their kingdoms. A large percentage of priests died. A poorer quality of clergy created increasing levels of corruption in the Roman Catholic Church. People became angry and dissatisfied with the Roman Catholic Church.
