Unit 3: Quest for Perfection

What is perfection? If someone/something/somewhere is perfect, what does that mean? Can you give specific examples? Is perfection a good thing?

Unit Questions How do humans cope with an imperfect world? Why do we seek perfection in body, soul, and in our world? Is Utopia attainable? At what cost would it be worth attaining? How far should we tamper with our own chemistry and biology?

How do humans cope with an imperfect world? Cope – manage; handle; deal with; survive

Why do we seek perfection in body, soul, and in our world? Seek – search for; try to find

Is utopia attainable? At what cost would it be worth attaining? Utopia - An ideal community or society possessing a perfect socio-politico-legal system. Dystopia - The idea of a society in a repressive and controlled state, often under the guise (disguise/appearance/façade) of being utopian. Attain – achieve; reach; grasp

How far should we tamper with our own chemistry or biology? Tamper – interfere; meddle; fiddle

Examples Can you think of any novels you may have read that might address this topic? Can you think of any scientific debates that might deal with these questions?
