Kyle Schow SEWER SYSTEMS

ANCIENT SEWER SYSTEMS There has been evidence of sewer lines dating back to 8000 B.C although the pipes usually lead to a creek. First flush operated toilets used in 3000 B.C This system had fallen into despair sometime in the middle ages. In the 19 th century people started to dump their waste out into the street. This caused many diseases to outbreak all over the world.

ANCIENT SEWER SYSTEM CONT. This caused people to set standards on how they handle sewage. Our modern sewer system started to adapt to what it is now during the 20 th century

MODERN SEWER SYSTEMS In Boston during the 1700’s people would dig up a hole where they would dump their waste. When the hole was filled people would hire a special team to empty it or to dig a new hole. After the Civil War, it was proven that contaminated water supply and unsanitary waste disposal caused contagious diseases. The English Public Health Code of 1848 made a modern code for plumbing that the world could follow.

MODERN SEWER SYSTEMS CONT. The Metropolitan Health Law considered most complete in the world. Twenty years later the New York Metropolitan Board of Health, the first health board in the U.S, was made. In 1876 Boston made their first sewer system
