Faculty of Law International Student Exchange Programme What Where How Why

student exchange programme overview What is it? What are the selection criteria? What does it cost and what financial assistance is available? What are the issues concerning credit? With whom do we have exchange programmes?

what is the exchange programme? An opportunity to spend a semester (or 2) at a university overseas with which the UoA has a student exchange agreement. You remain a student at the University of Auckland while on exchange. You are a “non-degree” student at the host university. You pay your normal fees at Auckland but are waived at the host university.

Academic skills Make new friends from all over the world Maybe learn another language Travel the world – weekend, holiday trips Try new foods, activities or sports Break out of your own comfort zone Gain international experience Discover a new country and culture Soft skills: communication, problem solving Independence Increase potential in job market Professional networks Intercultural competence Personal growth New perspectives on your field of study – academic development Fun Challenge Once in a lifetime experience Counts towards your degree Why go on exchange?

Submit Auckland Abroad online application (includes statement of purpose and financial details) and one supporting document - the course approval form - prior to the deadline. NB! For Law students, get preliminary academic approval from AD(I) for Law - David Grinlinton); final course approval of courses can be done later. 2. Complete Auckland Abroad interview process/ group information session 3. Based on the interview, grades, academic approval, and places available at the partner university, the decision is made whether to nominate you. 4. If nominated, you then complete the overseas application form; the host university makes the final decision.

costs/financial assistance There are no additional fees for participating in the programme (students pay fees at UoA, but fees are waived at the host university). However, you are responsible for the costs of participation. Student loans and allowances are portable. Exchange scholarships and travel grants are available: –Auckland Abroad Exchange U21 Awards; –Auckland Abroad Travel Awards; –Auckland Abroad Special Grant. Financial assistance is provided by some overseas universities.

Course approval You must seek prior approval of your proposed course of study at the host university from the Associate Dean – International before going on exchange. Approval will not be given to undertake courses which are very similar to courses already taken at Auckland. Course changes made once you are at the host university must be done in consultation with the Associate Dean - International.

credit transfer Auckland Abroad will transfer the credit from your host university once: They have received your official transcript from your host university; You have submitted the credit transfer form (with approvals for all courses you took overseas); You have submitted your exchange report. Note that: Credit, not letter grades, are transferred back to your Auckland degree. If you fail a course at your host university you won’t get credit for that course at UoA.
