PARTS OF SPEECH Nouns Nouns are naming words and can be classified into four categories: Common nouns are words which are used for any person, animal, place or thing. Abstract nouns are words which name feelings or qualities — such as ‘hatred’ or ‘excellence’. Proper nouns are words for particular persons, places, or things. They always begin with a capital letter. Collective nouns are words used for collections or groups of similar persons, places, animals or things.
