Dyslexia Dyslexia affects 1 in 10 people. So there is probably someone with dyslexia in your class if not several! However lots of people don’t understand what it is. Hopefully, after this presentation you won’t be one of them!

What do you know about dyslexia? Are the following statements true or false? 1.People with dyslexia always have difficulties with literacy 2.Dyslexia can cause problems with numeracy 3.Dyslexia means someone isn’t clever 4.You can tell someone has dyslexia by looking at them 5.Sometimes a person with dyslexia can be forgetful 6.A person with dyslexia can be very creative 7.A person with dyslexia can be very inventive and think up new ideas

So…. What is Dyslexia? Now have chat with your neighbour about what you think it is…..

What is dyslexia…… The word ‘Dyslexia’ is a Greek word…’difficulty with words’ it’s been around for hundreds of years! Some people think it’s just about reading, writing, numeracy but it can affect your life in many ways …?

People are born with dyslexia… Biological/Neurological: brain is ‘wired’ differently Dyslexic people use their brains in a different way.. Which can be good! Genetic – can be inherited, scientists have begun to identify ‘dyslexic genes’ Dyslexia often ‘runs in the family’ Dyslexia is real and people have to find different ways to live with it… That’s a challenge but dyslexic people love challenges!

Gemma is dyslexic and this is how it affects her… I have difficulties reading, writing, spelling. I have some difficulties with maths. Sometimes I find it difficult to concentrate. I get letters or numbers mixed up. I have problems meeting deadlines or being on time. I can be quite forgetful. Have good and bad days. But I’m really good at subjects like art, music, drama, sports, building/designing.

Dyslexia also gives Gemma lots of good things… Inventive thinker.. I come up with new ideas! Excellent trouble shooter...I’m good at solving problems Creative.. I love music art and drama Good communicators… I’m good at explaining my ideas Vivid imaginations Curiosity… I love finding out about new things How about you? Talk to your neighbour about what you’re good at…

Lots of famous and talented people have dyslexia!

Challenges… Sir Alan Sugar is a very successful businessman. Some people say that he was good at solving problems and coming up with new ideas because he is dyslexic….

Artistic… Picasso is a world famous artist. People say that he was such a brilliant artist because he was dyslexic…

Inventive… Henry Ford designed the first motor car Some people say that he was so inventive because he had dyslexia…

Creative… Keira Knightley is a world famous actress. Some people say that she is so creative because she has dyslexia…

You’re not alone… People can feel bad about having dyslexia but remember that millions of people all over the world have dyslexia..

Charities such as the British Dyslexia Association work hard with the government, schools and families to help people with dyslexia There is a lot of information on dyslexia on their website For advice you can call their National Dyslexia Helpline:
