People that changed the world Auguste Rodin People that changed the world By: Sarah Kuczynski

Auguste Rodin (1840 – 1917) Grew up in Paris, France Refused admittance to Ecole des Beaux-Arts three times 1875 – Rodin travelled to Italy where he was greatly inspired by Michelangelo's art Rodin was not accepted for his work at the time; however earned him fame from controversial pieces

“The Thinker” – originally known as The Poet One of Rodin’s most famous works includes the sculpture titled The Thinker. Originally the statue was supposed to represent Dante sitting upon Rodin’s other sculpture of The Gates of Hell. The sculpture displays human composition of “meditation battling with an inner struggle.” Other pieces of Rodin’s symbolize human qualities and express an inner and personal connection between the art and the viewer. “The Thinker” – originally known as The Poet

France at the Time Meanwhile in France: Time Period: Modern Era Concept: Expressionism Nationality: French Dates: 1840 - 1917 Meanwhile in France: French Constitution: 1830 July Monarchy: 1831 - 1848

Auguste Rodin’s Expressionism rediscovered art appreciation Auguste Rodin was criticized for his sculptures because the art would not represent the normal thought of people. In 1891 he received much controversy over his sculpture of Balzac because the way he perceived the late Frenchmen did not agree with the people. After Rodin’s trip to Italy, he began to display a strong relation to Michelangelo’s architecture. Rodin used his inspiration from Italy as a means of expressing a different point of view to the world. He would demonstrate a bigger concept within his work.

Auguste Rodin would begin to demonstrate the Renaissance in the 19th century; this sparked the re-innovation of the artistic era. Rodin used criticism to his advantage and continued working on different sculptures that he knew would spark controversy; it would make people talk about their own opinions. His art would express human emotions and would let the viewer focus on the message Rodin is trying to portray by the facial and the body expression. By Rodin’s expression for art, it paved the way for modern sculptures as well as sculptor's of Rodin’s time.
