Francis Inquiry  Cavendish Review  Care Certificate The Care Certificate – Why? Achievement of the Care Certificate should ensure that the healthcare support worker has the required values, behaviours, competences and skills to provide high quality, compassionate care. Replaces National Minimum Training Standards (NMTS) and Common Induction Standards (CIS)

The Care Certificate – Who? All patient/client/service user facing staff across the entire health and social care workforce Transferability EmployersSectors / Roles Prioritised to new staff to care Clinical Healthcare Support Workers

The RBCH Pilot Starting Point Prior to July 2014 at RBCH - Induction for HCSW based on perceived local need - Not mapped to Common Induction Standards or National Minimum Training Standards - 1 Week HCA Induction (Inclusive of mandatory requirements)

3 week programme - 2 week clinical skills classroom - 1 week supernumerary (minimum) The RBCH Pilot The HCSW Induction All days mapped to Care Certificate Standards Communication Day Communication with hearing impaired Communication with visually impaired Communication theory and SBAR Communication workshops Assisting with Patient Hygiene Day Bed bathing / assisting with hygiene needs Foot and nail care Mouth care Stoma Care Continence Care

Care Certificate Assessor - Registered health professional - Mentor qualification not necessary The RBCH Pilot Assessment Candidate and Assessor complete workbook over 12 weeks - Assessment in practice - Under direct supervision

The RBCH Pilot Completion Upon completion - Certificate issued - Details logged on ESR - Employee may now work under indirect or remote supervision

The RBCH Pilot Lessons Learnt Over 100 new employees on programme Risks -Cultural shift -Time to complete workbook -Bank and part time staff -Non-mandatory (currently)

The RBCH Pilot Lessons Learnt Over 100 new employees on programme Successes -Candidates describe empowerment at point of employment -Education and Training Department able to easily and effectively monitor HCSW progression following induction -Line managers and registered staff are actively participating in the development of HCSW workforce -Adopting Care Certificate Standards as minimum standard creates solid foundation of HCSW in order to implement progression pathways.
