Microsoft Excel is…  …a spreadsheet program that allows users to organize data, complete calculations, graph data, and develop professional looking reports.  There are four major parts of Excel:  Worksheets  Charts  Lists  Web Support

Major parts of Excel:  Worksheets…  …allow users to enter, calculate, manipulate, and analyze data such as numbers and text.  The term worksheet means the same as spreadsheet!  Charts…  …pictorially represent data  Excel can draw a variety of charts (pie chart, bar graph, etc.)

…Major parts of Excel  Lists…  …organize and store data.  For example, once a user enters data into a worksheet, Excel can sort the data, search for specific data, and select data that satisfies defined criteria.  Web Supports…  …allows users to save Excel worksheets in HTML format, so a user can view and manipulate the worksheet using a browser.

Task Pane…  …is a separate window that enables user to carry out some Excel tasks more efficiently.  When you start Excel, it displays the Getting Started task pane, which is a small window that provides commonly used links and commands that allow you to open files, create files, or search Office-related topics on the Microsoft Web site.

The Excel Worksheet  A workbook is…  …like a notebook  Inside the workbook are sheets called worksheets  Worksheets are…  …sheets organized into a rectangular grid containing columns and rows  Excel opens a workbook with…  …three (3) worksheets.

The Excel Worksheet

The Worksheet  A sheet tab displays…  …at the bottom of the workbook and contains the sheet name.  The column heading…  …identifies each column and is located above the grid. (A, B, C, D, etc…)  The row heading…  …identifies each row and is located on the left side of the grid. (1, 2, 3, 4, etc….)

The Worksheet  A cell is…  …the basic unit of a worksheet into which you enter data.  A cell reference is…  …a cell’s unique address, which is the coordinates of the intersection of a column and a row. (A1, T9, etc.)  To identify a cell, specify the column letter first, followed by the row number.

The Worksheet  Active cell…  …the cell into which you can enter data.  The active cell is identified in three ways:  A heavy border surrounds the cell  The cell reference shows immediately above column A in the name box  The column heading A and row heading 1 are highlighted so it is easy to see which cell is active
