The lateral direction affects angle, which is the goalie’s key positional input. Lateral movement along with strong angle play is essential to overall positioning.

Physical markings on the ice and sideboards aid in angle positions but cannot always be counted on as many rinks are different in configurations The only constant features (for now) are the puck and the net.
