DISCUSS FINAL SI ISSUES AND QUESTIONS Savon & Yvette

Why ride in the van to SI? It builds great memories. You don’t have to add miles to your car or wait for a mileage reimbursement check. If you are tired after a long day of teaching, you can rest, read, and listen to music. Learn new things about your teammates. Robert, Yvette, Lynne, Savon, & Eliz will be there. Beth, Dianne, and Kim will be on the van. Robert if you are interested! We will hook you up!

DISCUSS GUSKEY’S IMPACT ON THE WORK OF THE PD TEAM Adriane, Abbey, Jason, Drew, Donna, Tara, Paul, Robert, & Eliz 22

How do we know if the PD has impact? “True professional development is a systemic process that considers change over an extended period of time and takes into account all levels of the organization.” (Guskey, 2000, p. 20) 5/1/2015 page 23

Level 1: Participants’ Reaction Level 1: Participants’ Reaction Level 2: Participants’ Learning Level 2: Participants’ Learning Level 4: Participants’ use of new knowledge Level 4: Participants’ use of new knowledge Level 5: Student Learning Outcomes Level 5: Student Learning Outcomes Level 3: Organizational Support and Change (Behaviors, Practices, Policies) Level 3: Organizational Support and Change (Behaviors, Practices, Policies) The Work Guskey’s Framework: Five Levels Adapted from Guskey, 2000, pp

Level 1 25 Measures participants’ immediate reactions Reveals “entertainment value” of the activity Focuses on basic human needs Improves design & delivery of future Professional Development

Level 2 Collected about 30 days following Professional Development Measures knowledge gained based on specific learning goals Improves content, format, and organization of future Professional Development 26

Level 3 Collected about 6 months following activity Focuses on organization characteristics and attitudes for success Impacts success of levels 1 and 2 Improves and informs future change initiatives 5/1/2015 page 27

Example PD Evaluation Questions 28 AspectQuestion Organization PoliciesAre any organization policies in conflict with program or activity goals? ResourcesDid you have the materials necessary for implementation? Protection From IntrusionsWas time for collaborative planning uninterrupted? Openness to Experimentation Do you worry about being criticized if positive results are not readily apparent?

Example PD Evaluation Questions 29 AspectQuestion Collegial SupportDo you have opportunities to visit the classrooms of colleagues and observe their teaching? Administrator Leadership and Support Is the principal an attentive participant in professional development activities? When invited, did district-level administrators take part in program activities?

Example PD Evaluation Questions 30 AspectQuestion Recognition of SuccessAre successful results with students a regular part of discussions at faculty meetings? Provision of TimeDid you have sufficient time to prepare for implementing these new practices? Was ample time provided to meet with colleagues and plan collaboratively?

Level 4 Collected about a year later Measures professional practice Utilized to restructure future Professional Development Level 5 Collected about two years laterMeasures student learning Used to improve program design, implementation, & follow up 31

Where do your ideas fit in? Level 1: Participants’ Reactions Level 2: Participants’ Learning Level 3: Organization Support & Change Level 4: Participants’ Use of New Knowledge and Skills Level 5: Student Learning Outcomes 5/1/2015 page 32

Reflection Questions How does this information impact our work? What features need to be included in every professional development event that is delivered by our team?
