Presentation transcript:

Characterization There are five layers of characterization. When you learn about a character, describing the character’s OUTER being is the very first layer of understanding. The first layer is the most superficial.

Characterization (continued) In order to reach an understanding of the INNER being of the character, you need to identify the TRAITS of that character.

Characterization (continued) TRAITS are things like: honesty, courage, determination, modesty, tolerance, etc. To find them, you need to peel off all five layers of characterization.

Characterization continued The second layer of characterization comes from what the character SAYS. What kind of language does he use? How does he talk to people? Is he respectful, smart-mouthed, serious, kind, generous…etc. What does the character say about what she believes in?

Characterization (continued) The third layer of characterization is what OTHER CHARACTERS SAY about the principal character. How is the character judged by his friends, his family, those who are older, those who know him well?

Characterization (continued) The fourth layer of characterization is what the character DOES. Do the characters’ actions match what they SAY they BELIEVE IN? If they “talk the talk”, do they ”walk the walk?”

Characterization (continued) The fifth and last layer of characterization is the INTERACTION between characters. How do other characters REACT to the principal one. How do they treat him, talk to him, respond to his actions?

Characterization (continued) When you discuss a character in writing, be sure to show all of the layers that lead to the INNER being of the character. Give specific examples from the text of things the character says and does. Give examples of the interactions and relationships with other characters that show what kind of character the author has developed.

Characters Develop Don’t forget to explain how your character has grown and changed. If the characteristics have developed and grown over time, show how their actions and words have also changed.

Anne Frank Character Analysis In a five-paragraph essay, describe Anne Frank. –Include the three character traits on your chart –Support each one with events and dialogue that support that characteristic. –Include the dialogue on page 751: “We’re young…So don’t try to take it out on us.” How do these words reflect Anne’s character?
