June 2010 – Common Core State Standards are released July 2010 – NYS adoption of the CCSS – 45 states have adopted CCSS School Year – schools develop curricula aligned to CCSS School Year – CCSS are implemented in grades 3 – 8. May 2013 – NYSED announces that the Common Core Algebra regents will mandatory for all students in the school year. Summer 2013 – NYSED releases the first two of five modules for Common Core Algebra School Year – CCSS are implemented in grade 9. COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS

COMMON CORE ALGEBRA “The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematic that students learned in the middle grades. Because it is built on the middle grades standards, this is a more ambitious version of Algebra I than has generally been offered.” * CCSS

MODELING “Modeling links classroom mathematics and statistics to everyday life, work, and decision-making. Modeling is the process of choosing and using appropriate mathematics and statistics to analyze empirical situations, to understand them better, and to improve decisions.” *CCSS

TRADITIONAL INTEGRATED ALGEBRA REGENTS The number of calories burned while jogging varies directly with the number of minutes spent jogging. If George burns 150 calories by jogging for 20 minutes, how many calories does he burn by jogging for 30 minutes? (1) 100 (3) 200 (2) 180 (4) 225

TWO REGENTS EXAMS Common Core Regents Exam- Tuesday, June 3, days later, 9 instructional days later Integrated Algebra Regents - Friday, June 20, 2014 * NYSED is providing local school districts the opportunity to take both regents exams, and the higher of the two test scores can be used.

EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS *NYS Math 8 Assessment Exam - End of April, 2104 Common Core Regents Exam- Tuesday, June 3, days later, 9 instructional days later Integrated Algebra Regents - Friday, June 20, 2014 *NYSED has submitted a waiver to the Federal Government to allow the Common Core Algebra Regents to serve as a substitute for the NYS Math 8 Assessment.

TEACHER PREPARATION Math teachers attended summer workshops on the new curriculum at a local college. Teachers met in the late summer to write lesson plans for the Common Core Algebra course. There are 7 teachers who currently teach the Common Core Algebra course. Teachers are assigned lessons to write. The lessons are then shared with the group, and after teacher input, lessons are modified. Homework assignments, quizzes and tests are handled in a similar manner. Teachers are scheduled to attend conferences on Common Core Algebra throughout the fall. Ongoing before, during and after school meetings to discuss curriculum. Teachers are in constant communication with each other during preps, and ing throughout the day and evening.
