This is a whole note. It is 4 beats in 4/4 time.

This is a half note. It is 2 beats in 4/4 times. It takes 2 half notes to equal one whole note.

This is a quarter note. It is 1 beat. It takes 4 quarter notes to equal one whole note.

This is an eighth note. It is 1/2 a beat in 4/4 time. It takes 8 eighth notes to equal one whole note.

This is a sixteenth note. It is 1/4 of a beat in 4/4 time. It takes 16 sixteenth notes to equal one whole note.

Let’s look at it this way: Each line is equal to each other!

Or another way to say this is: += +++ = = =

This is the easiest way to think about all this: += + + = = + =

Two eighths next to each other have a bar across the top of the two notes. They are equal to one quarter note.
