The ‘skills 4 change Greenbelt©’ programme has been developed for NHS Wales by the NLIAH skills 4 change team, who have a wealth of experience in six sigma, lean thinking and other continuous improvement methodologies. skills 4 change Greenbelt© teaches delegates advanced service improvement skills, using a structured, data-driven approach to solving problems. The material has been carefully pitched to avoid unnecessary complexity and to be as relevant as possible to healthcare. Programme overview

Delivery format The training programme consists of 5 stages: 1. Half day project scoping session 2. Day 2-4 workshop on identifying problems, gathering data and finding root causes 3. Day 5-6 workshop (2-3 months after days 2-4) about developing and implementing solutions. Delegates also sit an open book exam. 4. Day 7 certification event (a further 2-3 months later) where delegates present their project to a senior panel. FutureprojectsFutureprojects day workshop 2 day workshop incl. exam project scoping 0.5 day Ongoing support throughout Presentation to certification panel Completed Project 1

Delivery format (cont.) The taught sessions give delegates the opportunity to apply the theory to their own projects and seek advice and guidance on implementation Hands-on support is available outside theses sessions from the skills 4 change team Course outcomes Delegates will deliver an improvement project and have the chance to obtain certification FutureprojectsFutureprojects day workshop 2 day workshop incl. exam project scoping 0.5 day Ongoing support throughout Presentation to certification panel Completed Project 1

 Delegates must have a project which has an Executive sponsor and is clearly linked to the organisation’sDesign for Improvement plan  Must form part of the individual’s PDP  The sponsor must commit to allowing the project team time to work on the project (approx 20% of the time for the team leader and 10% for team members)  Delegates must commit to attending all sections of the programme  Delegates should be competent in basic use of MS Excel (copy/paste is enough!)  Should ideally be in a leadership role for a service or service group Delegate pre-requisites

A problem that needs solving, where the solution is not yet known There are clear symptoms of the problem e.g. high DNAs, breeches etc. Something that will take 6 months or less to solve Something that’s performance is - or could be - measured on an ongoing basis (i.e. every month / week / day / hour) X Implementing an identified solution e.g. “we need an on-line referral form” X Very large projects e.g. merging Finance functions for 2 Trusts X Projects which are heavily reliant on other organisations Suitable & unsuitable project guidelines

If you’re interested in attending a Greenbelt course, please discuss with your line manager or your organisation’s training department. For details of forthcoming courses or to book a place, please contact Sue Roberts: landline If you’re interested in taking part
