History of Houston In the 1836, two New York real estate promoters, John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen purchased 6,642 acres that they hoped could begin building “a great center of government and commerce.” The city to be was named after Sam Houston, the hero of San Jacinto, whom the Allen brothers admired and anticipated to be the first President of the Republic of Texas. Historical Features This is the San Jacinto Battleground State Park. The Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution, took place on April 21, On that day, Texas forces led by General Sam Houston ambushed General Antonio López de Santa Anna's Mexican forces in the area. Hundreds of Mexican soldiers died, while very few Texan soldiers died.

Transportation The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas, or METRO, provides public transportation in the form of buses, trolleys, and lift vans. Uptown, METRO provides free service on the Uptown Shuttle. The other transportation is mostly car, bicycle, motorcycle.

Climate in Houston Houston's climate is classified as being humid subtropical. On summer, daily temperatures are in the 90 to 105 °F. Winters in Houston are cool and temperate. Snow is almost unheard. In December 24, 2004, there was snow in Houston after about 14 years.

Reliant Stadium There are over 17 colleges and university that are available in Houston. The most famous is the Rice University because the Rice Stadium was the home to the Super Bowl VIII, and Super Bowl XXXVIII was played at Houston's Reliant Stadium in February 2004.

Space Center in Houston The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center ("JSC") is the NASA installation wherein is located the Mission Control Center. JSC is located in Clear Lake City, which since 1977 has been a part of Houston, Texas. The land occupied by the space center was donated to NASA by Rice University. JSC's location is the reason that the first word spoken from the Moon's surface was "Houston".

My Opinion about Houston! Houston is a great city to visit especially for people who loves sports. The museums are great, the Galleria mall is awesome (it’s one of the biggest mall in the U.S.), but the downtown is so small. I don’t think I could live in Houston because it’s just too quiet and no cool activities compared to New York!
