Chapter 1: Immense Power Genesis 1:1-2:3 Chapter 2: Immeasurable Love Genesis 2:4-2:25 1. Chronological Events are reported in the order they occurred. Chapter 1 clearly shows the orderliness of God’s creation. 2. Creation of the Cosmos. Universal in scope. 3. Name of God is “God.” Almighty God in relation to the world. Shows His majesty, glory. 4. God spoke the world into being. Evidence of His power over all. Transcendent nature of God. Keeps His distance. Detached 1. Logical/Topical The events are recorded in this sequence to tell a story. Chapter 2 demonstrates God’s intimate involvement with Man. 2. Creation-Caring for Man Focus is specific in Eden. 3. Name of God is “LORD God” Personal name for God. Shows His tender love. 4. God molded man with His hands Feeling of personal involvement, shows the intimacy of LORD God

Chapter 1: Immense Power Genesis 1:1-2:3 Chapter 2: Immeasurable Love Genesis 2:4-2:25 5. God “created” (bara). The Hebrew word bara is only used in OT with God as the subject and no material is ever mentioned. ●Only God can bara. ●All this culminates in 1:27, And God “bara” man in his image, in the image of God He “bara” him, male and female He “bara” them. 6. It was Good (tov). 1:4,10,12,18,21,25. It was very Good (1:31). All of God's creation appeared to be symmetrical and self-reliant. Not even a hint of possible disharmony. 5. God “formed” (yeser) The word “yeser” indicates He used His own hands as a pottery craftsman molds a work of art. ●This begins in 2:7, And LORD God formed man formed from the dust of the earth and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils; and man became a living soul. ●Climax may actually be 2: It is not Good for man to be alone. (2:18) From the beginning of the 2nd creation narrative, we see a reliance upon community and companionship, both vertically (towards God) and horizontally (with one another).

Theological Contributions of Genesis 1  Transcendence of God  Order, harmony and Perfection of His Creation  Centrality of Humankind

Salvation Housed in Judgment Genesis 3:15 God is the Prime-mover in redemption God is the Prime-mover in redemption Lesson in bad grammar Lesson in bad grammar “Her seed” (Where is the Father?) “Her seed” (Where is the Father?)

Components of Evil  A false understanding of God  Distrust in God (inner attitude)  Rebellion against God (outer action)

A Lesson from the Flood  Genesis 1.2 Deep  Genesis 1.2 Deep ~AhTi tehom  Deep  Genesis 7.11Deep ~AhTi tehom  Deep  Genesis 8.2Deep ~AhTi tehom Note: The water of the flood is MORE than just rain (6:17; 7:11, 17; 8:2) Sin reverses (un-creates?) the very act of creation (Rom 8:18-21)

A Lesson from the Flood Based Upon Creation : Genesis 1:3-8 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning-- the first day. 6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning- - the second day.

A Lesson from the Flood

Based Upon Jesus Christ: Colossians 1: He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Hebrews 1:3 3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
