Where are we going as a city? A successful Third Sector is key to achieve these ambitions. The Third Sector is ready and able to play a larger role shaping Sheffield’s future We have an opportunity to work together and do things very differently 2020 City Strategy2035 Visioning Distinctive Successful Inclusive Vibrant Sustainable Demographic driven demand Shifting identities Meeting diverse demands Rising citizen expectations Technology

Huge and diverse sector (est 4000 organisations) involving volunteers, able to quickly respond and develop new ideas and projects based on needs in the community Many small volunteer led groups working at a neighbourhood level Sector has diversified revenue, generates income and brings substantial charitable funding in to Sheffield because of the track record of success. Third Sector Consortia cover over 150 organisations and run multi-million pound contracts including the Work Programme, Future Jobs Fund, SCC Carers Contract etc Sector is not simply an alternative provider of public services – it meets community needs where state support does not reach. We are able to speak with and develop our communities, especially the most disadvantaged. That makes for better policy and for more responsive provision for the community We have experience and skills of delivering services at both neighbourhood and citywide levels, especially in disadvantaged or marginalised communities. A strong and vibrant Third Sector is essential to creating and sustaining the thriving communities we need in Sheffield The sector played a key role in making Sheffield what it is today. We have created and innovated to deliver huge changes in disadvantaged communities. The sector is more sustainable, generates more income and is less reliant on grants. Expertise delivering front line services to disadvantaged groups gives the Third Sector unique insight. This can inform commissioning structures and strategic service design. Sheffield State of the Sector Survey responses Funding 1/3 face over 21% reduction in income 1/3 don’t have funding for this year 63% Generate income (only 11% reliant on grants) How is the sector dealing with this? 78% have reduced hours of both F/T and P/T staff 69% had issued redundancy notices at time of survey Demand for services 71% organisations report an increase in demand for services 72% organisations report an increase in individuals wanting to volunteer

What we need from you Demonstrate you value the contribution of local people and the Third Sector by: Supporting Voice and Influence groups to co-ordinate strategic voice of the sector Including the Third Sector in strategic service design Including the Third Sector in development of city strategies Supporting the implementation of the recommendations of VCF commissioning task and finish group to create a level playing field on commissioning.
