The Age of Jefferson Mrs. McKevitt Review

America in 1800 Oregon Territory: claimed by Russia, Spain, England & the United States Louisiana Territory: claimed by Spain who would give it to France. Home to Native Americans As population grows pioneers move west to farm and help the nation spread out

Jefferson: Our 3 rd President Elected in 1800: a bloodless revolution that shifted power from Federalists to Republicans The Electoral College tied and the House of Representatives voted to break the tie As the first Republican president Jefferson decreased the size of government and ended many federalist programs

Marbury vs. Madison Jefferson did not want to honor Adams’ last minute appointments The Supreme Court, under Chief Justice John Marshall, declared this unconstitutional and established Judicial Review.

The Louisiana Purchase Purchased from France for $15 million Gave the US control of New Orleans and the Mississippi River Doubled the size of the US. Went against Jefferson’s belief of a strict construction of the Constitution Gave US greater control of North America

Lewis & Clark Led the Corps of Discovery Departed from St. Louis and traveled on the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean Assisted by Sacagawea Created accurate maps that would lead to greater exploration. Zebulon Pike explored the southern Rockies

Challenges to Neutrality American ships were being attacked at sea and sailors impressed Jefferson issued the Embargo Act ending all foreign trade This hurt the American economy Madison limited the Embargo Act England angered by this encouraged Native Americans, led by Tecumseh, to attack Americans War Hawks called for war with England

War of 1812: The Second War for Independence Fighting took place on Lake Erie and Americans invaded Canada The British invaded Washington, DC and burned down the White House At the Battle of Fort McHenry, Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner War ended in 1814 with the Treaty of Ghent

Results of the War of Less Reliant on foreign trade 2.Weakened Native Americans 3.Nationalism (Pride in our country) Two weeks after the war was over Americans had a great victory of the Battle of New Orleans crushing the British Navy and proving their independence for once and for all!
