3rd Annual HI-ProFILE Conference Shaping the Future Shaping the Future using the Health Informatics Career Framework Jackie Barker Head of the Health Informatics Professional Development Programme

Where have we come from? Lack of identity for HI professionals Health informatics is a young discipline Wide range of functions Many levels of seniority Lack of understanding/ agreement on what health informatics is No established career pathways No clear ‘entry’ route Does not yet display the attributes of a ‘profession’ No standardised approach to role development and recruitment Same jobs, different job title and band Patchy access to education & professional development programmes Core clinical applications overly reliant on key individuals

The Career Framework Online resource for NHS and partner organisations, which aids workforce flexibility, individually, locally, regionally and nationally. Can be used equally effectively for a wide range of purposes Role based Linked to, enhances, and brings together other employer, specialist and qualification frameworks such as KSF, SFIA Based on common national standards giving a common language and currency Provides a coherent ‘picture’ of the wider health informatics function giving it ‘identity’ Places health informatics in the mainstream of healthcare

The framework UK Project – led by Wales Based on Skills for Health Career Framework Over 90 HI job roles on the career framework Practical examples and case studies Summary of potential uses of framework Integrated with and supported by HI-ProfILE people and resources in Wales Connecting for Health and PHI in England

Personal Benefits Increased personal and professional stature brought about by mainstreaming of health informatics Improved access to education, training and development Improved career prospects and choice via a career structure and pathways Clear entry routes and career pathways increase the ability of NHS to ‘grow its own’ staff Real life case studies showcasing individuals’ career success

Organisational Benefits Standardisation of role development provides clear understanding of health informatics roles Co-ordinated and planned development of roles and structures Practical tools provides employers with the means to develop effective teams with the right skills in the right place Increased flexibility and skills transfer enable organisations and staff to adapt to change more effectively and are able to transcend organisational boundaries

HICF Demonstration
