On-Demand Writing Purpose To provide students the opportunity to demonstrate independently the communication skills they have developed through instruction To reflect authentic reading and writing —understanding the role reading plays in the development of writing without testing reading ability To use source material to promote authentic content in writing To reflect the type of writing required for College and Career Readiness

 Narrative:  Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details and well-structured event sequences. (Can be embedded in IW and AW.)  Informational/Explanatory:  Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.  Opinion (K-5)/Argumentation (6-12):  Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. 3 Modes of Discourse 3 Modes of Discourse

{{ Opinion (K-5)  Chooses supporting evidence (usually emotional and/or anecdotal) that is favorable only to the writer’s OPINION  MAY consider opposing viewpoints, but does not spend time discussing or refuting it  Purpose: To convince the reader that the writer’s opinion is the ‘right’ opinion. Argumentation (6-12)  Presents logical, relevant, and research-based evidence that supports the writer’s CLAIM.  MUST consider opposing viewpoints by presenting refuting and relevant evidence (counterclaim)  Purpose: To allow the reader to adopt the writer’s position or agree to disagree; however, the reader should appreciate the writer’s claim as having merit

Assessment Information  OD Assessments will be administered in late spring  All 5 th, 6 th, 8 th, 10 th, and 11 th grade students will be assessed.  Students will respond to 2 prompts: o 1-passage-based prompt o All grades: 90 minutes/4 pages o 1-stand alone prompt --may include short texts or a writing situation. o 5 th : 30 minutes/2 pages o 6 th, 8 th, 10 th, 11 th : 40 minutes/2 pages  The test will be administered in 2 separate testing sessions, as determined by either the DAC or a school’s BAC.

On-Demand Writing Blueprint 2012* Assessments are based on the Kentucky Core Academic Standards (KCAS) which are the common core state standards for English Language Arts (ELA). Passage-Based Prompt: 1 mandatory prompt Stand-Alone Prompt: Choice of 2 prompts Grade: PB Prompt : SA Prompt: 5 Informative/Explanatory Narrative/Opinion 6 Informative/Explanatory Narrative/Argumentative 8 Argumentative Narrative/Informative 10 Argumentative Informative/Explanatory 11 Informative/Explanatory Argumentative *This will be rotated each testing cycle.

On-Demand Updates (1/2012)  The form will be stated in the prompt.  There is no set form for any grade.  The form is there to provide context for purpose and audience.  The form will not enter into scoring.  The assessment rubric will be holistic, not analytical  The assessment rubric will have four levels. There will be one rubric for all types of writings.  It is important to use the instructional rubric as our expected outcome.  Scorers are being trained to recognize that these pieces are first draft.  Students may use non-print text to enhance their idea development
