What is the ADDIE Model? The ADDIE Model was developed in 1975 by the Center for Educational Technology at Florida State University for the US Army as a way to address the increasingly diverse educational backgrounds of enlistees. Since that time the Model has undergone numerous revisions and alterations as instructional design has advanced throughout the years. Still, despite the evolutionary changes that have taken place, the basic model has remained intact.

First Phase of the ADDIE Model

Analysis The analysis phase entails identifying the problem, goals, learner needs, and any degree of pre-existing knowledge of the subject matter at hand. Other considerations such as delivery options and any constraints or time frames are also determined in this phase (ADDIE Models- Learning Theories).

Second Phase of the ADDIE Model

Design The design phase of the ADDIE Model insures that training and learning models are systematically developed. “This process is driven by the products of the analysis phase and ends in a model or blueprint of the training process for future development” (Clark).

Third Phase of the ADDIE Model

Development The development phase involves building what was created in the design phase. This is the phase where the program that is to be deployed is revised, rewritten, and tested (Shoemaker, 2010).

Forth Phase of the ADDIE Model

Implementation This is the phase of the process is where everything that was developed for the instructors and learners is finally delivered. This is an extremely critical part of the process where the instructor and learner play integral parts in the programs success or failure (Clark).

Fifth Phase of the ADDIE Model

Evaluation The last phase of the process is evaluation. This is where the program/process that has been thoroughly analyzed, designed, developed, and implemented is given an in depth review in terms of its success or failure. This is known as the summative evaluation. There is also a formative evaluation that takes place at each step of process. Depending on the results these evaluations yield, programs and processes are modified as necessary ( ADDIE Models-Learning Theories).

Final Thoughts The ADDIE Model has played a vital role in the worlds of Educational Technology as well as Instructional Design. Its process provides a tried and true method of developing successful programs for both the instructor as well as the student. Regardless of whatever the latest trends in either technology or instructional method are, the ADDIE Model remains an integral part in their introduction into the educational world.
