In Groups What does Salt do? What does Light do? 6

Salt

In Groups What does Salt do? Flavour, preservative, soothing ointment, keep roads safe What does Light do? Warn (lighthouse), make clear (street lights, reading light), celebration (birthday, Christmas), Keep safe (security), give information (clock), warmth (sun)

Matthew 5 13 “Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt- seasoning that brings out the God-flavours of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage “Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven. 2

Song: Be Salt, Be Light Be salt, be light, Show God’s love to those around you Be bold, be strong, For the Lord your God is with you. I am not afraid, (No! No! No!) I am not dismayed, (Not me!) Because I’m walking in faith and victory, Come on and walk in faith and victory, For the Lord your God is with you. 2

Groups Children: Make people out of play dough (which has salt and glitter in it) Adults: Why does Jesus say we need to be salt and light? 5

Why are we to be salt and light? Bring out best in others (flavour) Help people defrost their cold hearts Show value what precious Help move people from the fog of despair Preserve Heal -Protect Warn Celebrate Make clear: truth, Jesus (Shed light) Lead Interesting: Contrasts Show way: Bring together

Groups Children: Make initial letters out of play dough for all the adults and children in the group Adults: Where and to whom are we to be salt and light? Draw / write all the places on the big sheet of paper (there must be at least 3 places for each person in the group) Bring out best in others - defrost cold hearts - Show what is precious – way from fog of despair Preserve - Heal – Protect - Warn - Celebrate Make clear: truth, Jesus - Lead – Show Contrasts Show way: Bring together 5

Groups: All together Start with all the play dough people at home and someone says “Dear God, help X, Y, A, B and C to be salt and light at Home this week” Then in turn find out who is going to each location (e.g. School, Work) 5 Bring out best in others - defrost cold hearts - Show what is precious – way from fog of despair Preserve - Heal – Protect - Warn - Celebrate Make clear: truth, Jesus - Lead – Show Contrasts Show way: Bring together

Top 9 God Flavours What happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard— things like: affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely. Galatians 5:22-23 (Message) 2
