Guide Words in Dictionaries 1

A dictionary is a book of words. The words listed in a dictionary are called entries and are printed in dark black print. Entries or words are arranged in ABC order. 2

Each entry includes the spelling, meaning, pronunciation, use, language of origin, and sometimes a picture of the word. Example: pedal (ped’ l) n. {from Latin, pedis, “foot”} 1. a foot device for powering a bicycle or other machine. 2. a foot- operated device of a musical instrument pedal vb pedaled also pedalled; pedaling pedalling 1. to use or work the pedals of something 2. to ride a bicycle 3

The dictionary will also give you the plural form of a word. Example: horse \’ho(e)rs\ n. pl horses plural part of speech 4

We use a dictionary to ……..  find the meanings of words.  find out the correct spelling of words.  find out how to pronounce or say words.  find out what part of speech a word is.  to find the plural(s) of words 5

A dictionary is divided into three parts. A beginning, middle and end.  Beginning of dictionary is letters A - F  Middle of dictionary is letters G - L  End of dictionary is letters M - Z 6

Guide Words Guide words are the words at the top of every page in the dictionary. They tell you the first and last word on the page. The word on the left is the first word on the page. The word on the right is the last word on the page. 7
