Regular & Irregular Verbs Past Simple Regular & Irregular Verbs

When do we use the past simple? We use the Past Simple to talk about an action or situation that happened in the past. We often say when it happened: . Time expressions such as yesterday, ago, in 2007, in April, last month, etc. usually come at the beginning or at the end of a sentence. . Today, this morning, this afternoon, this evening, etc. can be past time markers if they mean before now.

How do we form the Past Simple? Regular & Irregular verbs We form the Past Simple of regular verbs by adding –ed to the verb: work → worked Many verbs have an Irregular Past Simple form: take → took In the past tense, the verb form is the same for all persons: I walked to school yesterday. She walked to school yesterday.

Regular Verbs: Infinitive Past Simple To most regular verbs We add -ed visit I visited my parents last weekend. watch They watched a film last night. start He started writing books. Verbs ending with –e: We add -d live She lived in Jeddah. like I liked the cake. Verbs ending with a consonant and - y We drop the –y and add -ied study I studied English. try She tried very hard. But enjoy I enjoyed the party.

Negative For negative statements in the past, we use did not and the infinitive (e.g. do, take, understand): I didn’t understand. (Not didn’t understood) Examples: . I did not stay at a hotel . We didn’t watch TV last night. . He did not arrive on time. . They didn’t come to the party. . My sons didn’t do their homework.
