Integrating Data and Publication Researchers Perspective Max Wilkinson APA 9th Nov 2011

Opportunity ODE Perspectives Needs and Requirements Opportunities

5 Abstract Requirements Researchers Location: make it safe Control: sharing and access Technical ability: training Credit framework: conventions Costs: infrastructures

Data Currency? Made safe: from misuse Control: access Technical ability: use markets Value chains: exploit markets Costs: infrastructures

Opportunity - Availability Researchers demand their data be treated as first class research objects Researchers loosen control over data Define roles of responsibility and control

Opportunity - Findability Agree convention to propose to publishers regarding data citation Use of persistent identifiers such as DOI’s Ensure common metadata and citation practices

Opportunity - Interpretability Recognise that data require metadata and work towards community best practice in metadata development

Opportunity - Re-useablity Be concerned about the long term ability for secondary use and consider or seek out responsible preservation actions

Opportunity - Citability Agree a convention for data citation Follow metadata standards for datasets Use of persistent identifiers such as DOI’s

Opportunity - Curation Develop sustainable and realistic data management plans Collaboration with public data archives

Opportunity - Preservation Develop sustainable realistic preservation plans Active engagement with public data archives

Is Data a currency? perhaps, but if so then we need to treat it as a valuable asset
