 Introduction  Aims of first aid  Importance  Rules of first aid  An example of first aid kit  Some ways to deal with certain emergencies  Where to get help?  Things to remember  Conclusion  reference

It’s a fact of life that injuries happen at work, at school, at sport, even on the roads and when we are with our families. when an accident occurs to a person, a doctor or medical aid may not be readily available. So, to save the life, immediate aid which is given before the doctor arrives is called first aid.

 To save life,  To promote recovery, and  To prevent worsening of the condition of the injured.

 Effective first aid can reduce the consequences of many injuries.  It helps to save lives by giving basic treatment before the professional medical help arrives.

 Reach the accident spot quickly.  Be calm and methodical and quick.  Look for- (a) is there failure of breathing? (b) is there severe bleeding? (c) is the shock light or severe? attend to these and then treat easily observable injuries  Clear the crowd with nice words.  Do not attend too much.

 First aid manual  Sterile gauze pads of different sizes  Adhesive tape  Adhesive bandages in several sizes  Elastic bandages  A splint  Antibiotic ointment  Antiseptic solution  Tweezers  Sharp scissors  Safety pins  Soap  Paracetemol  List of emergency phone number

Wounds  Handle the injured part as gently as possible.  Make the patient sit or let him/her lie down.  If the wound is in a limb and there is no fracture, raise the limb. This will lessen the bleeding.  Remove any foreign objects found on the wounds.  Place a clean dressing over the wound and bandage firmly get a doctor.

 Seat the casualty with the head slightly bent forwards.  Ask him/her to breathe through the mouth.  Loosen the clothing at the neck.  Pinch the soft part of the nostrils together firmly.  Apply a old compress (ice pack or wet cloth)to the nose for ten minutes.

 Treat the fracture on the spot.  Never attempt to bring the bones to normal position.  Handle very gently. Avoid all unnecessary movements of the injured part.  Apply a splint to give support to the broken bone and to prevent unnecessary movement.

 Clean the area gently with clean water  Submerge the burnt area in cold water.  Apply a solution of salt and water in out of the way places.  Cover the injured part with dry dressing.  Do not apply cotton and any greasy substance to the burns.

 Ask the victim if he/she has had a reaction before.  Wash the sting site with soap and water to prevent infection.  Apply an ice pack over the sting site to slow absorption of the venom and relieve pain. -because been venom is acidic, a paste made of soda and water can help  Seek medical attention if necessary.

 Lay the victim on his/her back.  Raise the victim’s legs 8”-12”to blood to drain from the legs to heart.  Prevent body heat loss by putting coat under and over the victim.

 Stand behind the person, who is choking.  Place your arms around their waist, and bend the body well forward.  Clench your first hand place it right above the person’s navel (belly button).  Place your other hand on top, then thrust both hands backwards into the stomach with a hard, upward movement.  Repeat this until the objet stuck in the throat is expelled through the mouth.

 In an emergency, always call (108).  Your doctor.  The emergency department of your nearest hospital.

 Some knowledge of basic first aid could mean the difference between life and death.  Consider doing a first aid course, so that you will be able to manage if someone is injured or becomes ill.  Keep a range of first aid kits handy at home, in the car and at work.

Knowledge of first aid as well as effective administration of the same will not only help us in times of necessity, but also makes life enjoyable one filled with confidence. prevention is better than cure is an old adage- but a gold one is that it gives the freedom from cure. A first aid training course will do a world of good for having this atmosphere and confidence in ourselves and expression of love and affection to our family members and all.
