What is the MFRF? The Connecticut General Statute Section a provides for the Military Family Relief Fund. This fund assists families of service members, domiciled in the State of Connecticut and currently serving on active duty, that experience a financial hardship correlating to the military service. How do I apply? The applicant will need to complete an application form (Form CTMD MFRF-1) and provide proof of relationship to service member, residency in Connecticut, and documentation that substantiates the hardship. Applications can be obtained by calling (860) or by visiting the MFRF office at the address on the back of this brochure. Applications are also available online at Who is eligible? There are four criteria that must be met for the applicant to be eligible for assistance from the MFRF. The Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard service member must be on active duty – either on regular active duty or on active duty as a result of mobilization of their National Guard or Reserve unit. The family member must be the service member’s spouse, child or parent. Other family members may apply if they resided with the service member prior to going on active duty. The family member must be residing in the State of Connecticut with the intent of permanently living here when the military member’s active duty service is terminated. There must be an immediate hardship experienced by the family member. Such hardships include, but are not limited to: Loss of income due to military service increase in expenses due to the deployment Injury to the applicant results in a significant loss of income Property damage or loss results in the need for assistance How much can I receive? There is no set standard or calculation to determine the amount an applicant can receive. This means you can request any amount from the fund. Once the application is received, the MFRF committee reviews it to evaluate your financial situation and then establishes the amount of the award. If the applicant requests assistance of $5,000 or more, the MFRF committee must unanimously vote in favor of the sum, otherwise a lesser amount will be granted. Applicants can not reapply for assistance for the same hardship, but can apply for benefits again should additional hardships occur. How long does it take? The MFRF committee must make a decision within one week of receipt of the application. If approved, checks are cut within two business days by the State Comptroller’s office and mailed to the applicant’s address as listed on the application.
