New Policies Presented by Robin Stansell VP, Event Operations

Exercise Pens at Dog Shows – All-Breed Clubs All-Breed shows must provide the following: Gated exercise pens of sturdy construction with a minimum size of 6’ X 8’ X 4’ (48 sq. ft. for each pen). For shows with suitable outdoors exercise areas and clean-up supplies the following number of ex-pens must be provided based on the number of entries: 0 – 1,000 dogs – 2 ex-pens 1,001 – 2,000 dogs – 4 ex-pens 2,001 – 3,000 dogs – 6 ex-pens 3,001 – 4,000 dogs – 8 ex-pens For shows without suitable outdoors exercise areas the following number of ex- pens must be provided based on the number of entries: 0 – 600 dogs – 2 ex-pens 601 – 1,200 dogs – 4 ex-pens 1,201 – 1,800 dogs – 6 ex-pens 1,801 – 2,400 dogs – 8 ex-pens 2,401 – 3,000 dogs – 10 ex-pens 3,001 – 3,600 dogs – 12 ex-pens 3,601 – 4,200 dogs – 14 ex-pens In all cases, a minimum of two ex-pens must be available. In the event of inclement weather at least two ex-pens must be under cover.

Exercise Pens at Dog Shows – Specialty Clubs Specialty shows must have a minimum of two exercise pens suitable to the size of the breed. Policy became effective April 1, 2007.

Exercise Pens - Reasoning Sanitary Conditions - Show sites are being lost because of poor care of the grounds Safety Concerns – Dogs have escaped from owners while off lead for their “exercise needs” Attracting New Exhibitors – New exhibitors often find dirty grounds objectionable and therefore are uncomfortable with the sport

Eligibility Requirements to Hold Future Dog Shows These requirements have always been in place for All-Breed Clubs Specialty Clubs are important to new exhibitors: Breed specific Significant impact to provide details The new requirements increase the opportunities to fulfill the requirements

Eligibility Requirements to Hold Future Dog Shows – Specialty & Parent Clubs For clarification purposes, the following definitions are being provided: Parent Club National Specialty – an event held once a year by a Parent Club. Parent Club Regional Specialty – an event hosted by an independent club in the Parent Club’s name that is not the National Specialty. Independent Specialty – a conformation event open only to a single breed. Parent Club and Regional Club Judges Education Program and National or Regional Specialty satisfies all Parent Club and Regional Club education requirements.

Eligibility Requirements to Hold Future Dog Shows – Category A Every club applying to hold a show must host at least ONE of the following five activities within 10 miles of the club territory and within the calendar year to be approved for the next calendar year’s show(s). TWO of these category A activities are required to be held within 10 miles of the club’s territory if the club holds no show within 10 miles of the their territory during the previous year. Independent AKC Sanctioned Match AKC Educational Match AKC CGC Test Active Public Education Program Other Educational/Outreach Programs

Eligibility Requirements to Hold Future Dog Shows – Category B Every show-giving club is required to conduct and document at least TWO of the following eleven activities in its area within the calendar year to be approved for the next calendar year’s show(s). FOUR of these category B activities are required if the club’s shows are held beyond 10 miles from the club’s territory. Conf and/or Obed/Rally, or Agility training classes Breeder Referral Service 2 Educational Programs for Club members & the public or Formal Judges Education Dog Show Tours Registered Handler Seminars or Workshops New Exhibitor Briefing Opportunities for Provisional Judges AKC Show Committee Seminars Disaster Planning Meet the Breeds Health Clinics

Two Specialties in One Day Two independent specialties may be held per day. Limited to 100 dogs (approximately four hours of judging) at each specialty. (This limit is inclusive of sweeps and special attractions.) Specialties can be the day before an all- breed or at other locations where specialty clubs may “cluster” for a weekend of breed specific judging.

Show Conflict Distance Policy (February, 2006) All-breed clubs and specialty clubs joining all-breeds are limited to 100 straight line miles from their territory as per current policy. Specialty clubs joining another specialty club of the same breed are limited to 200 miles from their territory. Specialty clubs joining the designated National Specialty are limited to 500 miles from their territory. Parent Clubs are encouraged to review distances involved and impact on other specialty clubs prior to approval of their member club approval considerations. Clubs may request a one-time exception from Event Operations through their Parent Clubs if distance limitations cause undue hardship on the club and no other specialty club, of the same breed, is bypassed without their concurrence.

Evening Specialty Policy Limited to 50 dogs and no special attractions in the evening Specialty will take two hours at the normal speed of judging Specialty Clubs can still hold small Evening Specialties that are shorter and less stressful by making a few changes: The Specialty Club may offer sweepstakes as part of the all-breed show during the day rather than the evening. Obedience can have two trials during the day or use an additional ring and run concurrently with the Evening Specialty. There is no Evening Specialty restriction to Junior Showmanship.
