Academic Vocabulary Grade 7

Objective Definition: Something that you are trying hard to achieve.

Sentences He vowed to achieve certain objectives before the end of his presidency. The best way to accomplish your objective is to work hard. Take out mandala

Opinion DEF: Your ideas or belief about a particular subject

Sentences The two students had very different opinions about school. What's your opinion of soccer?

Predict Definition---to say that something will happen, before it happens

Sentences It is difficult to predict what the long-term effects of the accident will be. As Liz had predicted, the rumors were soon forgotten.

Analyze Definition: To examine or think about something carefully in order to understand it.

Sentences The student tried to analyze the results from the experiment. By analyzing his actions, speech and thoughts, the student could figure out Rikki’s character traits.

Summary Definition: A short statement that gives the main information about something, without giving all the details.

Sentences Give a brief summary on a separate sheet of paper. Use your plot chart for the summary on the story.

Environment Def: The air, water, and land on Earth, which can be harmed by man’s activities.

Sentences Those chemicals are harmful to the environment. Describe the environment during the food fight at lunch.

Hypothesis Def: An idea that is suggested as an explanation for something, but has not yet been proved to be true.

Sentences One hypothesis is that the victim fell asleep while driving. Another hypothesis is that the victim was texting while driving.

Compare Definition = To examine or judge two or more things in order to show how they are similar.

Sentences The students tried to compare their science and math teachers. We compared Andrew and Duffy in the “Duffy’s Jacket” story.

Contrast Def: A difference between people, ideas, situations, things, etc., that are being compared.

Sentences The two cultures have great similarities and great contrasts. What contrasts can you find between Antonio and Felix?`

Theory Definition: An idea or set of ideas that is intended to explain something about life or the world, especially an idea that has not been proved to be true.

Sentences In science, we are studying the big bang theory. At church, we are studying the theory of creation.

Collaboration Def.-When you work together with another person or group to achieve something.

Sentences The project in class involves collaboration with three other students. The reporter worked in collaboration with the police on the murder mystery case. Have your introduction out

Infer Def.-To form an opinion that is probably true because of the information you have.

Sentences While she didn’t say she was mad at me, I could infer based on the look on her face. I make inferences when I read Touching Spirit Bear about Cole’s personality based on his actions.

Evolve Def-Changing gradually over a long period of time.

Sentences Fish evolved from prehistoric sea creatures. She evolved from a snobby, immature girl to a responsible, nice teenager.

Cycle Def-A number of related events that happen again and again in the same order.

Sentences In second grade, we studied the life cycle of a butterfly. Bullying can be a vicious cycle and happen over and over again.

Sentences 1. They spoke Spanish well, and promised to interpret for me. 2. The girl tried to interpret the meaning of her dream. Pass in AOW WS to the left.

Relevant Def.- Directly relating to the subject or problem being considered.

Sentences Your question in class should be relevant to the topic of discussion. He made a relevant comment about the law during the court case.

Identify Def.-To recognize and correctly name someone or something.

Sentences I can identify all the trees on campus. I can identify the theme of the story.

Thesis Def.-A long piece of writing about a particular subject that you do as part of an advanced university degree. The main idea sentence in your essay.

Sentences My cousin is still working on her thesis about mice. My thesis sentence explains what my entire essay will be about.

Comprehend Def.-To understand something.

Sentences I tried to comprehend the chapter in the book, but it was too difficult for me. I cannot comprehend what you are saying with all of that gum in your mouth.

Analogy Def.-Something that seems similar between two situations, processes, etc.

Sentences We used analogies today in language arts. I used an analogy to compare my life to a roller coaster.

Verify Def.-To discover whether something is correct or true.

Sentences The principal needs to verify if what he said is true. Please verify that this is your correct phone number.

Sequence Def.-The order that something happens or exists in, or the order it is supposed to happen or exist in.

Sentences Be careful to perform the actions in the correct sequence. Which sequence of numbers did you use to unlock the safe?

Differentiate Def.-To recognize or express the difference between things or people.

Sentences It’s important to differentiate between fact and opinion. It’s difficult to differentiate between affect and effect.

Structure Definition The way in which the parts of something are connected with each other and form a whole, or the thing that these parts make up.

Scenario Definition: A situation that could possibly happen.

Sentences Imagine a scenario where only 20% of people have their jobs. What scenario would you prefer—having long hair or no hair?

Determine Def.-To find out the facts about something.

Sentences Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. How can you determine the difference between volleyball and basketball?

Convey Def.- To communicate or express something, with or without using words.

Sentences Ads convey the message that fruit is good for you with pictures. I tried to convey that you needed to take off your hood, but you thought I was brushing my hair. Pass in AOW all the way to the left

AQUIRE Def.-To obtain something by buying it or being given it.

Sentences The teacher needed to acquire a new computer. Have you acquired the new video game?

Sentences The rigid authorities arrested the man on the spot. The rigid rock wouldn’t budge, even though four of us tried to lift it! My mother’s rigid face told me that she wasn’t going to let me go to the movies. Have reading log 5 out

Transfer Def. To move from one place, school, job, etc. to another, or to make someone do this, especially within the same organization.

Sentences In order to go to Woodcreek High School, I need to get a transfer. She transferred the call to the secretary.
