East Africa Drought Response
Today, 12.4 million people are in desperate need of assistance in East Africa
In recent years, droughts in Eastern Africa have become frequent, leaving little time for communities to recover
Crops have failed, grazing land has dried up, livestock are dying, and with skyrocketing food prices people have few options to feed their family
CRWRC is responding in Kenya as well as parts of Ethiopia and Somalia.
CRWRC has been responding to drought conditions in Kenya for nearly a decade
During this crisis, CRWRC’s Kenyan response is targeting the districts of Isiolo, Mbeere, Tharaka, Narok, Kajiado, Turkana, West Pokot, Laikipia, Taita Taveta, and Kilifi /
Food, water, and feed for livestock will reach 112,000 Kenyans for five months
This will include direct distribution and in some areas food-for-work projects such as growing drought-resistant grass for livestock
A Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist has also been employed to: - help communities build on capacities that exist in their communities - improve their ability to withstand future droughts - increase their ability to survive
CRWRC is also working through partner agencies to respond to urgent needs in Ethiopia and Somalia
In total, CRWRC’s $9 million drought response will reach 144,000 people
