Who speaks the Queen Mab speech, and why? Mercutio in order to convince Romeo that dreams are not important

How old is Juliet as the play begins? How long is it until her next birthday? She is 13. A little more than two weeks.

Give one reason Romeo’s parents state as proof that he’s depressed (act 1, scene 1). *He’s not sleeping well and spends a lot of time at night alone in the nearby woods *During the day he locks himself in his darkened room *He refuses to communicate with his parents

Who has the idea to crash the Capulet party? How does he know about the party? It’s Benvolio’s idea. He and Romeo read the guest list in order to help the illiterate servant.

Why does Benvolio propose for himself and Romeo to attend the Capulet party? So Romeo can check out other girls and get over Rosaline

Why does Romeo agree to go along to the Capulet party? So he can admire Rosaline’s beautify all evening.

List three events that occur during the first act. *The opening fight scene begun by servants & prince’s pronouncement *Benvolio comforts cousin Romeo and discovers he loves Rosaline *Lord Capulet responds to Paris’s suit *Mercutio’s Queen Mab speech *The Capulet party scene; R meets J

Lord Capulet responds to Paris’s request to marry Juliet with two conditions that must happen first. Name one. *Juliet must be about two years older. *Juliet must get to know whomever she marries and approve the selection.

Name two people who get angry during the Capulet party and why each gets angry. Tybalt—because he realizes Romeo, a Montague, is at their party Lord Capulet—because Tybalt won’t obey his request to leave Romeo alone

During the party scene, Romeo says, “Is she a Capulet? My heart is my foe’s dept.” Explain why this statement is ironic and what type of irony it contains. It contains situational irony, which is an unexpected twist in the story’s circumstances. Romeo falls in love with a girl who’s not eligible for him to marry because her family is his enemy.

What does Mercutio do to tease Romeo in act 2, scene 1? He makes offensive comments about Rosaline.

What happens during the balcony scene that causes Juliet to be alarmed or frightened? Romeo, who had been hiding in the trees, speaks to her out out of the shadows.

Why does Juliet feel concerned or worried during the balcony scene? She’s afraid that Romeo will get caught and killed by her kinsmen.

What does Juliet feel embarrassed during the balcony scene? She’s embarrassed that Romeo overheard her declaration of her love for him, but she doesn’t know how he feels about her.

Who first mentions marriage during the balcony scene? Juliet

The “business” part of the balcony scene involves what future plans? They’re going to get married.

As the balcony scene ends, what does Romeo announce is to be his next action? He’s going to Friar Laurence to get his help in getting married.

Explain why there’s dramatic irony in act 2 scene 1 or 2. *Scene 1—Mercutio mentions Rosaline, not knowing that Romeo is over her, but we know it Scene 2—we know Romeo is eavesdropping but Juliet doesn’t.

What evidence is there from act 2 that Tybalt is still angry at Romeo after the party? He sends a challenge to his father’s house.

Who abuses the Nurse the most in act 2, scene 4? Mercutio

After her discussion with Romeo (act 2, sc 4), the nurse has two assignments. Describe one. 1.To take Romeo’s message about going to Friar L back to Juliet 2.To meet Romeo’s servant to get a rope ladder to take back to the Capulets’ house.

How long has Juliet been waiting for the Nurse, and from what time to what time (act 2, scene 5)? Three hours; from 9 - noon.

List three events that occur during the second act. *The balcony scene *The Nurse comes to Romeo on the street & gets teased *Romeo and Juliet decide to marry *Tybalt sends a challenge *Friar Laurence agrees to marry them
