Life ● born January 21, 1824: parents, some siblings died young ● Graduated West Point via determination ● Fought in the Mexican American War ● Professor at VMI: natural and experimental philosophy, artillery, physics
Role in Civil War ● was Lee’s right hand man ● promoted to Major General ● sided with home of Virginia ● Successes: First Battle of Bull Run, Shenandoah Valley campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville ● Failures: Defending Richmond
Legacy and Lore ● Nickname “Stonewall” o 1861, first Battle of Bull Run: Jackson changes forces to fill gap in line; fellow General says, “There is Jackson, standing like a stone wall.” ● His death (May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville) o Lee, in arguably riskiest move in war history, sends Jackson to flank overpowering Union o succeeds, but confusion leads to friendly fire at Stonewall. Arm is amputated, and he dies days later
