The Levitical Offerings and Sacrifices ( Leviticus 1-7, 17, 24:1-9 ) As A Type of Christ and His Church Fredericktown church of Christ Gospel Meeting * August 9, 2009 * Prepared by Chris Reeves

 The OT offerings and sacrifices fore-shadowed the sacrifices that would be made by Christ and His church (Gal. 3:24; Col. 2:17; Heb. 8:5; 9:9; 10:1)  As such, we should learn the important lessons from these OT offerings and sacrifices

1. Burnt Offering (1:3-17; 6:8-13) 2. Meal Offering (2:1-16; 6:14-23) 3. Peace Offering (3:1-17; 7:11-36) 4. Sin Offering (4:1- 5:13; 6:24-30) 5. Trespass / Guilt Offering (5:14 – 6:7; 7:1-10

Commitment to God 1. Burnt Offering (1:3-17; 6:8-13) 2. Meal Offering (2:1-16; 6:14-23) Communion with God 3. Peace Offering (3:1-17; 7:11-36) Cleansing by God 4. Sin Offering (4:1-35; 6:24-30) 5. Trespass / Guilt Offering (5:1 – 6:7; 7:1-10

OLD TESTAMENT SACRIFICE LEVITICUS ( SHADOW ) NEW TESTAMENT SACRIFICE HEBREWS ( SUBSTANCE )  Person, offering, priest (1:1-5)  Sin sacrifice (1:4)  Blood sprinkled on the altar of sacrifice in the holy place (1:5)  Sweet smell (1:9,13,17)  Person, offering, priest = Christ (6:14; 10:10)  Sin sacrifice (7:27; 8:3)  Blood sprinkled (9:14,23,26,28; 10:10,12,14; 13:12,20)  Sweet smell (Eph. 5:2; Phil. 4:18)

OLD TESTAMENT SACRIFICE LEVITICUS ( SHADOW ) NEW TESTAMENT SACRIFICE OF JESUS CHRIST ( SUBSTANCE ) 1. Burnt offering 2. Meal offering 3. Peace offering 4. Sin offering 5. Guilt offering  1 Pet. 1:19; Eph. 5:2  John 12:24; Isa. 53:12  Eph. 2:14-17; Col. 1:20  Isa. 53:12; Heb. 13:12  Isaiah 53:10; 1 Pet. 2:24

 NT Christians are priests offering spiritual sacrifices (1 Peter 2:5)  Our service to God today is an “offering” (Rom. 15:16; Phil. 2:17; 2 Tim. 4:6; Heb. 13:15)  Our service to God today is a “sacrifice” (Rom. 12:1; Phil. 4:18; Heb. 13:10,15-16; Rev. 5:8; 8:3; 6:9)

 Sacrifice follows a divine pattern (2 Tim. 1:13)  Sacrifice has a cost and a price to pay (Mal. 3:8)  Sacrifice is giving the best to God (Mt. 6:33)  Sacrifice is personal (Rom. 12:1-2)  Sacrifice is a “sweet savor unto God,” a memorial (Phil. 4:18)

 Sacrifice requires attention to detail (Col. 3:17)  Sacrifice requires continuous work (Lev. 24:1-9; 1 Cor. 15:58)  Sacrifice is a “gift” to God (Heb. 5:1; 8:3-4; 9:9)  Sacrifice is serious and sacred (Lev. 17:1-9, ; Heb. 12:28-29)

 Sacrifice is a “communion” with God and one another (1 Cor. 10:16-18; 11:18-34)  Sacrifice must not be a mere ritual or routine motion, but a heart-felt obedience (1 Sam. 15:22; Psa. 61:16-17; Isa. 1:10-20; Mic. 6:6-8)  Sacrifice is meant to show total commitment to God, full communion with God, and complete cleansing by God
