TWO GROUPS SACRIFICES 1.Fellowship Offerings Burnt Offering Meal Offering Peace Offering 2.Cleansing Offerings Sin Offering Trespass Offering

Fellowship Offerings Burnt Offering – Purpose: to propitiate for sin in general (propitiate carries the idea of taking the place of, make reconciliation, show mercy, by providing a vicarious sacrifice) – Sacrifice: According to wealth (ox, sheep, goat, dove) – God’s portion: all the animals – Priest’s portion: none – Offerer’s portion: none – Occasion: daily, special occasions, festivals, acknowledge God’s mercy, thanks offering (private burnt offerings – consecration of priests, purification of women, removal of leprosy, removal of uncleanliness, & breach of a vow)

Fellowship Offerings Meal Offering – Purpose: Gift – Sacrifice: Grains – flours, oil and frankincense (varied to wealth of the person) – God’s portion: Part to God – Priest’s portion: Rest to be eaten by the priests – Offerer’s portion: None – Occasion: Anytime & First Fruits

Fellowship Offerings Peace Offering – Purpose: Fellowship or communion meal with God with whom they have a relationship – Sacrifice: Grains – Unblemished male or female ox, sheep, or goat – God’s portion: Fatty parts – Priest’s portion: Wave offering = breast goes to priest or Heave offering = thigh goes to priest – Offerer’s portion: Remainder eaten in tabernacle court – Occasion: Thanks for blessings, Vow completion, Show thankfulness & love to God Thanks offering – purpose: unexpected blessings or deliverance Votive offering – fulfillment of vows Freewill offering – express general thankfulness and love

Cleansing Offerings Sin Offering – Purpose: To atone for specific unintentional transgressions where no restitution was possible and purification – Sacrifice: Bull for priests or who congregation; He-goat for a ruler; She-goat or lamb for commoner; Dove or Pigeon or fine flour for poor – God’s portion: Fatty around the kidneys and liver – Priest’s portion: All the rest – Offerer’s portion: None – Occasion: Atonement (4:31, 35), Forgiveness (5:14-16:7)

Cleansing Offerings Trespass or Guilt Offering – Purpose: To atone for specific unintentional transgressions and intentional sin (6:1-5) where restitution was possible (5:5, 10, 15, 18) – Sacrifice: Ram only – God’s portion: Fatty around the kidneys and liver – Priest’s portion: All the rest eaten in the court – Offerer’s portion: None – Occasion: Atonement (4:31, 35), Forgiveness (5:14- 16:7)

Cleansing Offerings Differences between Sin and Trespass Offerings – Trespass offering only applied to individuals – Trespass called for a Ram only – Trespass pertained to the misappropriation of what belong to God or a fellow Jew
