The Burnt Stick (Anthony Hill) Weeks 2-4  Written and published before there had been much public discussion about the 'stolen generations', The Burnt Stick is the story of a young Australian aboriginal boy, John Jagamarra, who was taken from his mother by the Welfare Department, and sent to the Fathers at the Pearl Bay Mission.   Key Focus areas  author and purpose  text structure  paragraphs  language choice  meaning of words  engagement with text  inferring  Pidgin and Aboriginal language  syllables  correct letter size  diagonal joins

DETERMINE ASSESSMENT TASKS The Burnt Stick  Task: Infer the meaning of an image from the book using the terms salience, gaze, offer/demand and camera angle.  Task: Running record of each passage post and pre reading.  Task: Write and publish a found poem using the text as a stimulus.  Task: Write and publish a parallel poem using the Text on Pictures app.  Task: Record strategies used to work out unknown words and record reading of unseen text on Educreations iPad app.  Task; Write a book blurb  Task: Write a passage using letters of correct size, slope and joins.  Task: Create a movie trailer for The Burnt Stick  Task: Dictation 
