So he will be dressed with a crown of glory. The it will say: O My Lord, give him more. So he will be dressed with the robe of honour. Then it will say: My Lord, be pleased with him so He will be pleased with him. Then it would be said to him: Read and rise, so for every Aayah a good will be added. [At-Tirmidhi]

Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan... for Allaah! Quraan 101 – 9 8 Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan – for Allaah! Reason for Revelation (of Soorah) – سبب النزول Sooratul-Masad Al-Bukharee recorded from Ibn `Abbaas that: The Prophet ﷺ went out to the valley of Al-Batha and he ascended the mountain (As-Safaa). Then he cried out, (“O people, come at once!”) So the Quraysh gathered around him. Then he said, (“Tell me, if I told you all that the enemy was going to attack you in the morning, or in the evening, would you all believe me?”) They replied, “Yes.”' Then he said, (“Verily, I am a warner (sent) to you all before the coming of a severe torment.”) Then Aboo Lahab said, “Have you gathered us for this; may you perish!” Thus, Allaah revealed, ﴿تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ ﴾ المسد: ١ (Perish the two hands of Aboo Lahab and perish he!) to the end of the Soorah. Inform me أَرَأَيْتُمْ I told you حَدَّثْتُكُمْ The enemy الْعَدُوَّ Come in the morning مُصَبِّحُكُمْ Come in the evening مُمَسِّيَكُمْ Would you أَكُنْتُمْ believe تُصَدِّقُونِّي warner نَذِيرٌ punishment عَذَابٍ severe شَدِيد Point to ponder: Aboo Lahab was informed a long time before he died that he was going to burn in Hell, yet he never accepted Islaam. Truly amazing! عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ : أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ إِلَى الْبَطْحَاءِ ، فَصَعِدَ الْجَبَلَ فَنَادَى : " يَا صَبَاحَاهَ ". فَاجْتَمَعَتْ إِلَيْهِ قُرَيْشٌ ، فَقَالَ : " أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ حَدَّثْتُكُمْ أَنَّ الْعَدُوَّ مُصَبِّحُكُمْ أَوْ مُمَسِّيكُمْ ، أَكَنْتُمْ تُصَدِّقُونِي ؟ ". قَالُوا : نَعَمْ. قَالَ : " فَإِنِّي نَذِيرٌ لَكُمْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ عَذَابٍ شَدِيدٍ ". فَقَالَ أَبُو لَهَبٍ : أَلِهَذَا جَمَعْتَنَا ؟ تَبًّا لَكَ. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ : ( تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ ) إِلَى آخِرِهَا. البخاريتَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ

Vocabulary – Aayah 1 الأسماء جَمْعٌمُثَنَّىمُفْرَد يَدٌ لَهَبٌ Flame/Blaze Hand أَبٌ/أَ بُو father الفِعْلُ الماضِي مؤنثمذكر تَبَّ تَبَّتْ To perish/ destroy يَدَانِ آبَاءٌ أَيْدِي Sooratul-Masad (Perish the two hands of Aboo Lahab and perish he!) The first part is a supplication against him and the second is information about him. Abu Lahab was one of the uncles of the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ. His name was `Abdul-`Uzza bin Abdul-Muttalib. His surname was Aboo `Utaybah and he was only called Aboo Lahab because of the brightness of his face. He used to often cause harm to the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ. He hated and scorned him and his religion. Tafseer – Aayah 1 تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ ﴿١﴾١

Sooratul-Masad Rabi`ah bin `Abbaad from the tribe of Bani Ad-Dil, who was a man of pre-Islaamic ignorance who accepted Islaam, said: I saw the Prophet ﷺ in the time of pre- Islaamic ignorance in the market of Dhul-Majaz and he was saying,‘O people! Say there is no god worthy of worship except Allaah and you will be successful.’ The people were gathered around him and behind him there was a man with a bright face, squint (or cross) eyes and two braids in his hair. He was saying, ‘Verily, he is an apostate (from our religion) and a liar!’ This man was following him (the Prophet ﷺ ) around wherever he went. So, I asked who was he and they (the people) said, ‘This is his uncle, Aboo Lahab.’ [Ahmad] Tafseer عَنْ رَبِيعَةُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ ، مِنْ بَنِي الدِّيلِ ، وَكَانَ جَاهِلِيًّا فَأَسْلَمَ - قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فِي سُوقِ ذِي الْمَجَازِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : " يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، قُولُوا : لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ تُفْلِحُوا " وَالنَّاسُ مُجْتَمِعُونَ عَلَيْهِ ، وَوَرَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ وَضِيءُ الْوَجْهِ أَحْوَلُ ذُو غَدِيرَتَيْنِ ، يَقُولُ : إِنَّهُ صَابِئٌ كَاذِبٌ. يَتْبَعُهُ حَيْثُ ذَهَبَ ، فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا : هَذَا عَمُّهُ أَبُو لَهَبٍ. رواه احمد جَاهِلِيًّا أَسْلَمَ رَأَيْتُ مُجْتَمِعُونَ وَرَاءَهُ Time of ignorance To accept Islaam I saw gather Behind him ضِيءُ أَحْوَلُ Bright Squint or crossed eyed غَدِيرَةٌ Plait/braid كَاذِبٌ liar تبع يَتْبَع follow

Vocabulary – Aayah 2 الأسماء جَمْعٌمُفْرَد مَالٌ Wealth أمْوَالٌ الأفعال المضارعالماضي أَغْنَىٰ عَنْ يُغْنِي Benefit/ suffice كَسَبَيَكْسَبُ Gained/ Harvested/ac quired الحروف مَا has a variety of uses. 2 are used in this aayah مَا NotThat/which For negation As اَلَّذِىْ Sooratul-Masad مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ ﴿٢﴾٢

Concerning Allaah's statement above : It has been mentioned from Ibn Mas`ood that when the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ called his people to faith, Aboo Lahab said, "Even if what my nephew says is true, I will ransom myself (i.e., save myself) from the painful torment on the Day of Judgment with my wealth and my children.'' Thus, Allaah revealed, مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ (His wealth and his children will not benefit him!) Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan... for Allaah! Sooratul-Masad مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ ﴿٢﴾٢ وَذُكِرَ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمَّا دَعَا قَوْمَهُ إِلَى الْإِيمَانِ ، قَالَ أَبُو لَهَبٍ : إِذَا كَانَ مَا يَقُولُ ابْنُ أَخِي حَقًّا ، فَإِنِّي أَفْتَدِي نَفْسِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ بِمَالِي وَوَلَدِي ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ : ( مَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ ). مَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ أَفْتَدِي ذُكِرَ قَوْم To be mentioned people I will ransom

Vocabulary – Aayah 3 & 4 الأسماء جمعمفرد نَار Fire الأفعال المضا رع الماضي صَلِيَ يَصْلَىٰ Burn لَهَب flame/ blaze الحروف ذَا سَ Used with the present tense to indicate the future possessor/essence Singular, masculine ذَاتَ possessor/essence Singular, feminine Sooratul-Masad سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ ﴿٣﴾٣ حَمَّالَةَ carrier امْرَأَةٌ woman نِسَاءٌ الْحَطَب firewood (And his wife too, who carries wood.) His wife was among the leading women of the Quraysh and she was known as Umm Jameel. Her name was `Arwah bint Harb bin Umayyah and she was the sister of Aboo Sufyaan. She was supportive of her husband in his disbelief, rejection and obstinacy. Therefore, she will be helping to administer his punishment in the fire of Hell on the Day of Judgment. (Who carries wood.) meaning, she will carry the firewood and throw it upon her husband to increase that which he is in (of torment), and she will be ready and prepared to do so. وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ ﴿٤﴾٤

Quraan 101 – 9 15 Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan – for Allaah! الأسناء مفرد Vocabulary – Aayah 5 حَبْلٌ rope جِيدِ neck مَّسَدٍ Palm fiber Sooratul-Masad فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍ ﴿٥﴾٥ Tafseer - Aayah 5 (In her neck is a twisted rope of Masad.) Mujaahid and `Urwah both said, "From the palm fiber of the Fire.'' Al-`Awfi narrated from Ibn `Abbaas, `Aatiyah Al-Jadaali, Ad-Dahhaak and Ibn Zayd that she used to place thorns in the path of the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ. Al-Jawhari said, "Al-Masad refers to fibers, it is also a rope made from fibers or palm leaves. It is also made from the skins of camels or their furs. It is said (in Arabic) Masadtul-Habla and Amsaduhu Masadan, when you tightly fasten its twine.'' Mujaahid said, فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍ (In her neck is a twisted rope of Masad.) “This means a collar of iron.” Don't you see that the Arabs call a pulley cable a masad?

The Interpretation of Sooratul-Masad In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful 1.Perish the two hands of Aboo Lahab (an uncle of the Prophet ﷺ ) and perish he! 2.His wealth and his children will not benefit him! 3.He will be burnt in a Fire of blazing flames! 4.And his wife too, who carries wood (thorns of Sa'daan which she used to put on the way of the Prophet ﷺ, or used to slander him). 5.In her neck is a twisted rope of Masad (palm fiber). Sooratul-Masad The Interpretation بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ ﴿١﴾ مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ ﴿٢﴾سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ ﴿٣﴾ وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ ﴿٤﴾ فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍ ﴿٥﴾١٢٣٤٥
