Basic Art Concepts Introduction to Value, Warm and Cool Colors, Hatching, Crosshatching. And Stippling Evelyn Cantrelle Loftin

Value Value – The term value, as it relates to art, refers to the lightness and darkness of color. A value change shows the varying degrees of a color moving from one intensity to the other.

This achromatic (black, white, and the endless shades of gray) palette illustrates an increase in value with each block.

This slide shows a gradual decrease in value from left to right. This is sometimes called a smooth gradation.

Warm Colors Warm colors are often associated with fire and the sun.

Cool Colors Cool colors are often associated with water, sky, spring, and foliage, and suggest cool temperatures..

Hatching Hatching is creating tonal or shading effects with closely spaced parallel lines. When more such lines are placed at an angle across the first, it is called cross-hatching.tonalshadingparallellinesangle

Stippling Stipple - Stipple is a drawing, painting, or engraving method employing dots rather than lines. Stippled works can be produced with any of a variety of tools, including pencils, crayons, pens, and brushes. drawingpainting engravingdotslinestoolspencils crayonspens brushes

The use of dots in increasing number create varying degrees of value.
