We Hatched Some Baby Ducks

First the eggs arrived… On Monday March 17th morning, our 7 eggs, incubator and brooder box were delivered along with an instruction booklet. We were all very excited as we were told that the eggs would hatch on Thursday. We talked about what animals hatch from eggs. Some of us thought they might be crocodiles or ducklings or spiders.

Rules we needed to follow to look after our chicks We had to look after the eggs carefully to make sure the chicks were safe and happy.

The Incubation The eggs were put in the incubator and a humidity tray was put in. We had 2 tasks. The first was to fill the humidity tray up with water every morning, so the shells wouldn’t become too hard, making it difficult for the chicks to hatch. We also had to check that the temperature stayed at approximately 37 degrees Celsius, so the chicks would have the best possible environment.

Pipping On Wednesday afternoon, we could hear the chicks chirping inside their shells. Then when we arrived at school on THURSDAY, we found 3 chicks. We noticed that the chicks inside 2 other eggs had started to pip. They were using their ‘egg tooth’ to break out through the shell.

Hatching During the day on Thursday and Friday the chicks started to hatch. It was really eggciting.

Finally they arrived One by one, they started to arrive. They looked really worn out when they came out of their shells, but it didn’t take long for them to fluff up. We watched very carefully and made a video of a chick hatching. We named them on Friday.

We named the chicks Daisy Fluffy Pippa Tweety Chirpy Beaky

We used the chicks to help us with our maths 4 girl chicks and 2 boy chicks make 6 altogether. 7 chicks take away 1 chick, because 1 did not hatch, left us with 6 chicks altogether.

We made a chick number line

The brooder box First one hatched, then the others followed. When they were bright-eyed and fluffy, we moved them into the brooder box. The brooder box had some sawdust and paper for them to scratch in. It also had a light for warmth and some food and water.

We have had the best time this morning. We were allowed to hold the chicks and we were very careful. Some of the chicks went to sleep in our hands. Louis even held a chick in our assembly.
