Presentation transcript:

Chinook Salmonid Adults Habitat: Open Ocean Duration: 2-4 years Swim back upstream to orignial hatching ground Smoltification period Swimming downstream from fresh water to salt water habitat Adults find partners, lay eggs, and die. Young fish hatch from their eggs.

Open Ocean threat: Disease or injury Predators such as shark, seabirds, sealions, and fishermen Upstream Threat: Injury Power plants Bears Starvation? Downstream threat: Difficulty transitioning to salt water? Power plants hatchery– disturbance of hatchery, etc, developmental problems Adults – May die of starvation before finding suitable partner.

Salmon Adults have to jump through a hopscotch like drawing representing a fish ladder. While they are performing these tasks, “bears” and “Powerplants” (dodgeball) may hit them with a ball to eliminate them. Salmon Fries and Smolts must do a variety of age- appropriate physical activities, such as doing jumping jacks, push-ups, situps etc.. One “Shark Attack” immunity can be earned by doing difficult or additional activities. Salmon Eggs – Everyone hatches by doing some sort of manual task, like balancing two ping-pong balls on top of each other for 30 seconds. Salmon Adults at the hatchery– must wait for a partner from the same team. No partner – they die! Final Survivor Challenge! Last team to win are the “Salmon Survivors!” Shark attack! Salmon Smolts and adults must run to 4-6 different station to get tokens. Tokens are earned by answering trivia questions about fish anatomy and the salmon lifecycle. Bear and Power plant immunities can be provided at certain stations.

Other survivor challenges Decorate the room in a Hawaiian theme – tiki torches, tribal banners. Pre Salmon Survivor worksheet or research activity so the students are well versed in the salmon lifecycle, fish anatomy, river ecology, and can answer the majority of the trivia questions. Keep track of points of each team. On the day of the Salmon Run Survivor! Start with giving students bandanas representing their two teams/two species. At the end, they must wait for a partner of the same species to answer the final question. During game day, use a mixture of physical and academic activities. Activities: Have the students recite a funny fish-related song or poem to earn a token. Finding gummy worms hidden in a bucket of sand. Helpers at station – Prior to game day, have the students select their fastest runners from each team as the smolts. Have the teams pick, or ask for volunteers of student helpers. Building card houses Fold an origami figure Put together a puzzle with blocks Remember and repeate back ever increasing long strings of words Tie? Students can play jenga to see who wins. Present an idol and a medol to the Salmon Run Survivor. The winning team can earn points. Duration: game can be conducted during one day or over several days.
