Initial Design The initial Design was a horizontal dispense - horizontal load system where the smart cartridge was loaded from a maintenance hatch on the side. In the initial design we tried to eliminate the ability of unwanted intruders by reducing entry points. By giving the main door and maintenance hatch a lip on the inside and mounting it flush with the face of the chassis we reduced the possibility of unwanted entry.

Pros: –This design was very simple –Has only 1 “entry point”, access to the maintenance hatch is dependant on main door being open Cons: –Once the main door was opened users had full view of the entire set of medicine packs, severely reducing security.

Initial Design Locking System This is a graphic representation of the dependant locking system of the main door and maintenance access panel. Servos were to be used to provide the electronic means of security. –A latch would be dropped into place and would act as a bolt in shear while keeping the main door and side door in line –At the same time protrusions on the end of the main door would fit into slots on the maintenance panel preventing the maintenance panel from being opened without the main door being unlocked first.

Second Design Locking System For the vertical drop- horizontal load smart cartridge system we needed a way to lock the cartridge in place. We did this by using a spring loaded piston that would manually have to be lowered by the authorized “loader.” Once loaded the pistons are released and maintained in place by a servo operated slot key.
