Stage One STAGE 1: EGG TO CATERPILLAR (or larve if you want to be fancy) An adult butterfly lays it’s egg on a leaf. Eggs hatch into caterpillars. The caterpillars eat all day for 2-4 weeks, and grow so quickly that they have to keep shedding their skin to give them enough space to keep growing!

Stage Two STAGE 2: CATERPILLAR TO PUPA The caterpillar attaches itself to a twig. It sheds its skin. The outside of the caterpillar dries to form a hard outer covering called a chrysalis. Inside, the caterpillar pupates which is fancy for changing into a butterfly!

Stage Three STAGE 3: PUPA TO BUTTERFLY The pupa (or chrysalis) becomes clear, or transparent for you “Fancy Kippsters”. A butterfly emerges with crumpled, wet wings. It pumps fluid into its wings to make them straight and lets them dry out. Then it goes in search of food!

Stage Four STAGE 4: BUTTERFLY LAYS EGGS A female butterfly lays its eggs on the underside of a leaf. It chooses the underside so that the eggs will not be seen and are safe. It chooses a leaf that the larvae (tiny caterpillars) can start eating as soon as they hatch.

Teaching Purpose The purpose of this powerpoint slideshow was to teach my students about the lifecycle of a butterfly. The lesson ended up going really well as the different slides and types of media helped reach the different types of learners. I have included photographs of the process, diagrams and a video to demonstrate the lifecycle of a butterfly.
