Learning Objectives Students will compare traits of mammals and birds. Students will explore how mammals and birds live and survive. Students will compare behaviors of mammals and birds. Students will classify different groups of mammals. Next

Mammals Mammals have fur or hair to stay warm. Mammals use lungs to breathe. Mammals that live in water, such as whales, also breathe with lungs. They come to the surface of the water to breathe. Most mammals give birth to live young. Most mammals learn from their parents how to care for themselves. Next

Birds Birds have feathers, two legs, and wings. Next Birds Birds have feathers, two legs, and wings. Birds have lungs for breathing air. Many birds also care for their young for a while after they are born. Young birds hatch from eggs.

Grouping mammals and birds Mammals are often placed into groups based on traits they share. Some mammals have pouches, spiny fur, live in the water, and are primates. The most common traits used for grouping birds are beak shape and foot shape. Beak shape can be used to tell what kind of food a bird eats. Begin Quiz!

Choose the animal that has fur or hair to stay warm:

Grouped by beak shape and foot shape. Which of the following is a trait that both mammals and birds share? Use lungs to breathe Hatch from eggs Grouped by beak shape and foot shape.

What is one way that birds are different from mammals? Care for young after they are born Have lungs for breathing air Use leaves and grass to make a nest to lay eggs
