Now, we’ll read a portion of an interview with Chinua Achebe. As you read, summarize Achebe’s answer to each question.

What would you say are Achebe’s purposes for writing Things Fall Apart? responding to something? Communicating an idea? Aiding the audience’s understanding of something? Countering an idea or belief? What did Achebe say in the interview to clarify or further explain these ideas?

Revisit the proverb from the beginning of class. Until the lion has a voice, stories of safaris will always glorify the hunter. With the new information from the interview, craft a response to the questions: In what ways and to what extent has Achebe given the lion a voice? Did he achieve his purpose(s)? Is his work and message enough to represent his culture/society?

Thinking about Achebe’s purpose and message, revisit the poem from which Achebe took the title of the novel. (pg 211) What images, ideas, and connotations do you see in the poem that parallel the novel? Do you think that the title of the novel is appropriate given your understanding of the poem? Explain.
