Is God just when He declares the unrighteous to be righteous? If He is just, He must punish the unrighteous; if He is gracious, He must forgive them. How can God be both? By paying in Himself the penalty for violating the law, God showed His justice: the demands of the law had to be met. They were met at the cross, but in the person of Jesus. Sa Krus. The Vindications In the Judgment {307} The different phases of judgment, with their open-book investigation, make sure that the angels (in the pre-Advent judgment) and the righteous (in the millennial judgment) can prove and be reassured that God is just in His dealings with humanity and that He has been merciful in each case.
