The Heart of Jesus (Part I): Whose Glory is it? John 17:1-5 By David Turner

Do we want glory? Most people want recognition, honor, glory. How do we get recognition, honor, glory? – From wealth – Popularity – Power – Accomplishments – Talent

Do I become angry when I’m not recognized for the work I’ve done on the job? someone else gets credit for accomplishments I deserve. I see someone receiving honor for talent when I believe I have more. Or jealous when someone receives recognition and I don’t.

Example of one seeking self-glory Acts 12:21–23 (ESV) 21 On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. 22 And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” 23 Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

There is no such thing as “a self made man” You’ve heard it: “Behind every great man there is a great woman.” Truth: Behind every great person there are many people that contributed to his/her greatness. No one becomes great in a vacuum. Ultimately, honor and greatness comes from God.

Our purpose isn’t self Q. 1. What is the chief end of man? A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. WESTMINSTER SHORTER CATECHISM

The Purer heart seeks glory for God. Video from Chariots of Fire

To Know the Heart of someone Listen to their prayers – Prayers I’ve heard – Prayers of the Bible Nehemiah Daniel David Jeremiah – This prayer of Jesus

John 17:1–5 (ESV) 1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

The Circumstances of Jesus’ Prayer The Upper room discourse was complete Judas had made arrangements to betray Jesus Jesus is on his way to Mount Olivet, where – He would pray another prayer, but in great despair and anxiety. – He would be betrayed by Judas. – He would be handed over to the Roman authorities.

Three parts to Jesus prayer John 17:1-5 – A prayer for himself – Theme : Glory John 17: 6-19 – Prays for the disciples – Theme: protection John 17:20-26 – Prays for all believers – Theme: they may be one

Reciprocate glory 1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, The hour? – crucifixion Christ would be glorified by the cross. The cross was Christ’s platform to glorify the Father. What platform has God given to you?

It’s all about glory To give him glory is not to impart something he does not have but to acknowledge the honor that is his due.

Christ authority puts him in position to give honor 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. Authority to rule Authority to judge Authority to give eternal life – To all whom the Father has given to him. Psalm 2:6–10 (ESV) 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The L ORD said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. John 5:27 (ESV) 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

Glory in the gift 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. The Father glorifies the Son. The Son glorifies the Father Believers are glorified by the Father through the son. The Father glorifies the Son

Christ’s purpose – glorify the Father 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. Stated as if completed. He was sent to glorify Him. He was given a work to do to glorify Him. He completed the work he was sent to do. What work has God given you to glorify Him?

God glorifies those that glorify Him 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. Christ’s glory is to be in His Father’s presence. Christ’s glory is to return to the glory He had prior to creation of the world.

The Father gave the son the platform of the cross to bring glory to His name. What platform has God given you that you may use it to bring glory to His name?

Jesus’ chief purpose was to give glory to the Father What is your?
