G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York1 Plans for Sci-Fi Prototyping. Contents:- Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors Design Issues Still to be Addressed Future Plans This work is being undertaken by Imperial College and Liverpool University physics Department (Peter Cooke), Fermilab (Alan Bross), KEK (Koji Yoshimura), Osaka (Yoshi Kuno, Akira Sato)

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York2 Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi A Reminder of the Layout of the 5 Stages ?

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York3 Reasons to build the Sci-Fi Prototype The aims of the Single stage prototype will be to:- Prove the feasibility of the design Solve any production problems Try to develop more efficient (and cheaper if possible) construction techniques Ensure that all stages can be made exactly the same Test the efficiency of the light guide connectors Check the spatial repeatability of the support system To create a working detector to allow full system functionality to be developed

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York4 The Original Model

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York5 Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Prototype Single Stage Layout

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York6 Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Connector Plate

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York7 Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Virtual Reality

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York8 Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Reality

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York9 Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The fibre optic connector design is governed by the following factors :- Multiplexing Layout of Sci-Fi ‘Stringing’ feasibility of the Connectors Cost, ease of manufacture and delivery Available space

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York10 Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The 1 st Iteration… This had  holes which where so close that it is impossible to mould not to mention that they would need to have the fibres threaded in the correct order.

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York11 Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The 2nd Iteration… This has a diagonal stagger to maximise the distance between the holes (it was still not enough) AND STILL 126 separate 350  fibres Need to be threaded per connector!!!

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York12 Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The 3rd Iteration… This has a diagonal stagger to maximise the distance between the holes but more important is that it multiplexes at the stage. This means that the fibres will be threaded in bundles of 7 from the Fibre plane and all subsequent units will have 18 1mmØ fibres.

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York13 Layout of the connectors in the space available Detail of Connector Plate

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York14 Design of the Single Stage The aim, as already stated, is to have all the stages the same. This means that there is only one development programme. Further advantages are:- that the amount of spares can be minimum All stages are interchangeable should it be necessary to fit a less efficient stage in a less critical position Production will be easier

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York15 Issues Needing to be Addressed Detailed design of tooling for the manufacture and assembly of the stages How to lay down the fibres to a known accuracy Light transmission of the connectors Multiplexing (is this the correct approach) Fixing and sealing into position …………………

G.Barber: Mice Tracker Meeting New York16 Future (short term) Plans To define and build the prototype stage whilst addressing the manufacturing problems To design and develop the tooling for the carbon-fibre structures To further develop the fibre-optic connector To develop assembly and installation procedures ???
