Key challenges in planning storage & distribution of Nets Presentation by Lorenzo Witherspoon RBM Partnership Secretariat, Malaria Medicines & Supplies Services Copenhagen – 1 February d
Unlike other malaria medicines, nets pose a serious logistical and financial challenge. The most common of these are: Mass / Bulkiness. Nets are both voluminous and weighty. Storing 2 million ITNs* would require 4,160 m 3 of warehouse space. Shipment. It would require the use of 54 40’ containers to effect international sea freight of these 2 million nets. Depending on the country, time of year and season, the number could easily double. Key challenges in planning storage & distribution of Nets *Size 150x190x180cm
Storage. Often overlooked during procurement process. Investigate and ascertain storage capacity along the distribution area. Then, stagger deliveries and link to actual distribution planning. DON’T request shipment of more nets than you can store. Costs – In-country storage and distribution of nets has proven capital intensive. Efficient planning and sufficient funding of these activities are frequently underestimated, and a sudden deficit could have serious implications to programme delivery. Distribution During Immunization Campaigns is the most opportunistic method of reaching the desired coverage targets, yet it is the most challenging, because –immunization cycles are not always necessarily atoned with net distribution schedules –pre-positioning at EDPs (extended delivery/distribution points) - drugs require different and often less cumbersome handling than nets –climatic conditions (i.e. rainy season) pose severe threat to implementation Key challenges in planning storage & distribution of Nets
Therefore… Procurement, reception, storage and distribution must be efficiently planned and synchronized. Key challenges in planning storage & distribution of Nets
